Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My dog had emergency surgery for an intestinal blockage. Healthy Paws quickly processed my claims (multiple vet visits) and I was reimbursed within two weeks. My prior experience with a different pet insurance company was terrible and Healthy Paws renewed my faith in pet insurance.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance has been a blessing to me and my fur baby. Because of the wonderful coverage they provide for my pet, Molly Grace has been given access to the best medical care when needed. Molly tore her Right ACL in Decemeber and had surgery followed by rehab which would have been extremely pricey without Healthypaws insurance. Then in March Molly torn her Left ACL so back to surgery she want. Thankfully this wonderful insurance once again helped cover a large portion of the cost for surgery, which without I would not have been able to afford especially so soon after the last surgery. Not only did they help relieve the financial burden during this time but they also... Read More

We have had Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for Molly, our 70 pound America Pit Bull since 2012. Since that time she has had major knee surgeries (TPLO) on both knees for a torn cranial cruciate ligament (ACL), 2 other surgeries to remove cysts, several visits to the emergency room and most recently to an ophthalmologist to remove a small growth in her eye. To make a long story short, all the claims have been made promptly in accordance to our plan (we chose $100 annual deductible, 90% reimbursement). The claims process is as simple as it can be. I have the Healthy Paws app downloaded on my iPhone. Simply open the app, select submit a claim, take a picture of the veterinarian’s invoice and... Read More

We first selected Healthy Paws due to the great reviews and the great coverage provided to AAA members. We have an older cat who has had some serious health issues. Healthy Paws has consistently provided quick service on claims including e-mails keeping us informed throughout the process. Whenever we call Healthy Paws, we always get a human and everyone with whom we have dealt has been helpful and friendly. We are very pleased customers.

I have a very sweet lab whose favorite pastime is eating. Unfortunately this has included a rib bone, swallowed whole, and the following year not one, not two, but three corn cobs. Healthy Paws was there for it all. These were both terribly scary events. The former included an overnight ER stay and an endoscopy to remove the bone and the corn cob feast resulted in 4 nights at the hospital, an endoscopy which could not remove everything and eventually surgery. I was terrified. I was also eternally grateful I could comfortably say please make all decisions medical not financial. Thanks to Healthy Paws I did not have to worry about the enormous bill I was about to receive. I have the $200... Read More

I have had Healthy Paws for my dog for around 2 years. I have not had to submit a claim until recently when my dog injured his leg. First, the customer service is top notch. Every person I talked to was extremely helpful and patient as I asked question after question. My claims were handled quickly as well. A week after the surgery, I received an email from Tim at Healthy Paws asking how he was recovering, sending well wishes for a quick recovery, and asking me to let him know how he was feeling. Again, excellent customer service! I have been raving about the service I received from them to anyone who will listen. I absolutely recommend Healthy Paws for pet insurance! We will be... Healthypaws has been fantastic to work with. We recently had to have some fairly serious exploratory surgery for our Chihuahua mix to see if there was any cancer. Fortunately the results were very good, and our dog is now healing quickly. We were so impressed with Healthypaws from the very beginning of our relationship last Fall. Great communication, the simplicity of claim submission, efficiency of claims management, speed of reimbursement, and then the personalized follow up. We could not be any happier with this program.

100% satisfied. We have insurance on 2 of our dogs and used both a couple of times in the last few years. People at Healthy Paw were always nice, caring, and they processed our claims fast. Thank you!

I am a relatively new customer of healthy paws. Just a month after the healthy paws insurance kicked in my 4 year old pup oshie tore his acl. The quote for the surgery was $4800-5200. I was nervous it wouldn’t be covered because I only had the insurance for a month. I filed a claim in minutes by uploading a picture of the surgery bill. I contacted my vet to fax oshie’s medical records to healthy paws, and within a week I was already notified that the surgery would be covered. In another couple days the money was deposited directly into my account. Every time I called for assistance there was no hold time and everyone I spoke with was extremely helpful and friendly. After the claim was... Read More

In January of 2016 we rescued our first pup from the county animal shelter - a 5 month old lab/pit mix that my girlfriend and I named Gaston. We picked up all the necessary items from the pet store and did what we could to make him comfortable, but as an insurance broker, I thought it would be a good idea to consider pet insurance for him. After speaking with a few underwriters from other companies (as well as reviewing their financial backers), we decided on Healthy Paws. For visits and normal preventative care, they do not provide coverage, and we were ok with that as those costs are minimal anyways. However, we (as well as our pup) have been very fortunate to have obtained coverage for... Read More
