Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I started looking for insurance for my Boston Terriers after my elderly Pug passed. I was able to provide her with the best care, but it wiped me out financially. I spent thousands in her last few months. When I requested a quote from Healthy Paws, I was concerned that insurance for two senior dogs would be pretty expensive. I was pleasantly surprised! The monthly cost and deductible were very reasonable. Purchasing Healthy Paws insurance was one of the best decisions I ever made. Only a month later, my boy was diagnosed with a brain tumor. I was completely heartbroken. Not knowing whether or not his life saving treatment would be covered, I began his radiation. Over $8,000... Read More

I highly recommend healthy paws to anyone who has a cat or dog . Vet bills can be extremely costly and from past experience we all know how we'd do anything to save our animals even if it put us in debt. My dog ate a whole bottle of Ibuprofen and thank god has made a full recovery after she was rushed to the vet for emergency care. We could have lost her and it would have devastated us. She had to be hospitalized for two days. I called healthy paws and they took care of 80% of my expenses as promised. It relieved my worries and I received a check in the mail in less than a week. I had a different type of insurance for my other dog before who had died and had spent a fortune on... Read More

Healthy Paws is amazing. They have been so good to my beagle. My beagle was never ill until she developed bladder stones; they were surgically removed only to have her almost lose her life. Two surgeries later and a lot of doctors visits Stella is getting better. Healthy Paws compensated me for everything as indicated in the policy. When I was in the E.R. at 2:00am and the doctor came out and said she needed emergency surgery- I knew I could say yes and wouldn't let my dog die or need to get an extra credit line to pay for her surgery. Owning a pet is like having a child, it our obligation to take care of it- insurance is paramount for that to happen. Healthy Paws is the best.

We've had an outstanding experience with Healthy Paws so far, covering our almost 2-year-old golden retriever. Like a typical golden puppy, he's had issues eating things he shouldn't, with a few visits to the emergency room as a result -- and Healthy Paws has been incredibly easy to work with. With the Healthy Paws app on my phone, submitting a claim is as easy as taking a photo of the vet bill. That's it. Consistently we've received confirmation of the handling of the claim within a few days, with the check arriving a few days after that. We've never had a hassle. Strongly recommended.

I was referred to Healthy Paws by a friend whose dog had cancer - they had had a very good experience with them. I checked out other insurance companies; none had the level of insurance I wanted nor were their prices as good. 3 weeks ago, I found a lump in my dog's chest area. Within 3 days, it was huge! My vet needle biopsied it with no conclusive results. An oncologist saw her the next day and ultrasound her from head to toe. i was told surgery was in order to remove the lump and get it biopsied. So far, all results are benign (non-cancerous)! Healthy Paws accepted faxed and emailed health records; their check for all these services was in the mail and received a week after... Read More

I highly, highly recommend Healthy Paws insurance. We have run into a couple health issues with our dog, and vet bills can add up very quickly. Even the small ones. Healthy Paws has always been very clear with their coverage policy. I have never even felt a need to call for clarification because the coverage policy on the website is so accurate. The process claims so quickly. Usually our claims are reviewed and processed within 2-4 business days (maybe even shorter). The only time it has taken a little longer is when we submitted a bill which was over $2,000, which is understandable for 4-5 day review (and no complaints here- it was covered!). It's amazing how quickly they process claims... Read More

This was by far the best decision our family ever made selecting Health Paws Pet Insurance Company. They have been a financial life-savor for us. It also enabled us to get our dog the best possible medical care available. In addition to the financial aspect, great customer service is important. We have found that the staff at Health Paws actually cares about our dog. They are the nicest, most professional and supportive people to deal with. Securing pet insurance and especially selecting Health Paws was a very smart decision and we recommend this company to our family and friends. Thanks Health Paws for being there when we needed you!

HealthyPaws insurance has been wonderful to our furry family. My Charlie had major leg surgery (front right elbow due to dysplasia) and is currently undergoing a six week recovery. I submitted the claims paperwork for 3 separate claims the same day as his surgery and have already received 3 separate reimbursement checks from HealthyPaws. They have been wonderful regarding communication regarding my baby (a GSD) and have inquired as to his recovery. I feel like everyone I have talked with at the company and extremely caring and very interested in my pets well being. I highly recommend HealthyPaws to anyone looking for pet insurance - one of the best investments we ever made for our... Read More
