Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Our one year old Chocolate Lab Bruno was diagnosed with knee dysplasia. He needed a very expensive arthroscopy surgery. Fortunately, I purchased Healthy Paws pet insurance when he was a puppy. If not for Healthy Paws Bruno may not have had this much needed surgery. They paid a major portion of the diagnostic test, surgery and medications. It was easy to submit the bills and I was reimbursed within a week. I would highly recommend Healthy Paws. Thankfully Bruno is on the road to recovery.

I've been using Healthy Paws for my dog's Insurance for the last 2 years and they are AMAZING to work with. They are incredibly responsive, accessible, and friendly. Their claim submission, communication, updates, and processing workflow is stellar. If I could find a 'human' Insurance company like Healthy Paws, I'd switch over instantly. That's no joke! Compared to the last Pet Insurance company we had used for another pet, HP is a total 180 degrees different. I no longer dread submitting claims, fearing that they're being sent into a black hole. HP's online submission process is incredibly efficient and they even process claims on the weekends! I'm obviously a huge fan and thrilled to... Read More

By having insurance with Healthy Paws it enabled our dog Charlie to get the surgery he needed that we otherwise wouldn't have been able to afford. We are grateful to Healthy Paws for existing in today's society as it has provided us the opportunity to give our dog the same love and care that we aspire to give all of our loved ones. Thank you Healthy Paws!

I decided to get insurance for my 1.5 yr old buddy Shiloh after witnessing a few fights at the dog park. As luck would have it, about a month after I got the insurance Shiloh got VERY sick. It was a whole month affair, because it took many specialists and exams to figure out what was wrong. Turns out he had something like a stick fragment lodged in his cheek. After lots of blood tests and medicine and tests, he ended up having surgery, and I ended up with a $4,000 bill for everything they did in 2 days at the hospital. Healthy Paws gave me $3800 back, covering everything but the consultations themselves. I officially swear by Healthy Paws, and Shiloh is all better :)

I did a considerable amount of research before selecting this company to insure my dog, who was a puppy, and my cat who was close to 7 years old. I have been with them for 4 years now and I cannot imagine being a pet parent without them. Anyone who has ever had a loved companion become ill unexpectedly knows of the incredible fear about getting the best treatment and how the cost of that care will impact you. When my puppy was 2, he contracted leptospirosis after a rural hike and was at death's door. Had it not been for Healthy Paws bearing the burden of the cost for his care and hospitalization, it would've been daunting. I was amazed that they processed the claim quickly and... Read More

To those who I spoke to, and those who processed my claim, I want to say a very big thank you. It was a struggle getting my husband to agree to pet insurance for a two year old dog. Obviously, I won that debate and I am currently walking around gloating with an " I told you so " kinda smirk on my face. The courtesy and kindness from all of those involved was so helpful and appreciated. And the promptness in processing my claims was also appreciated as I am retired and the bills will be coming due soon. Thank you once again. I surely will be recommending this company to my friends with doggies. Julie

Healthy Paws provides remarkable service. I have filed a couple of claims in the past few years (I have two wonderful four-legged babies) and time after time, Healthy Paws has offered easy and quick service. I have received my reimbursement check in less than two weeks after filing the claim. I highly recommend them. You would not be disappointed.

Poor customer service. THE PLANS DO NOT COVER ANY DENTAL, OTHER THAN ACCIDENT. This is a given that I understood when initially taking out the insurance years ago. Upon calling in to customer service to question if a procedure would be covered, the rep (who couldn't answer the question until the claim is filed) instantly flagged my claim in process, which was for antibiotics. It's been delayed for seven days, and I just received the request for records. Four years of feeding this company monthly premiums and they delay to pay any chance they get. I've had to let all the folks that I referred to Healthy Paws about the current experience and let them know to go else where for... Read More

Official Response

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Justin, We’re sorry you were not satisfied with your customer service experience. At Healthy Paws, we don’t flag claims for coverage or denial based off of contact with our clients. We use a pet's medical records and notes written by the attending veterinarian to determine if there are any issues which would keep us from approving a claim. Our claims team member could not make a coverage determination for you over the phone since we did not have the medical records/veterinarian notes from that particular visit. Our claims team has reached out to your veterinarian to get those records so that we can process your claim as quickly as possible As you stated in your review, we do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee (veterinary exam fee). Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. By making preventative care (which includes routine dental care) part of the pet parent's financial responsibility, it allows us to offer a complete accident and illness plan at an affordable monthly premium. Our policyholders value comprehensive coverage and unlimited benefits at reasonable rates, which is why they choose to assume the responsibility of paying for those costs. In regards to pre-existing conditions, our pet insurance protects you against future conditions, and unfortunately, no pet insurance company can cover pre-existing conditions. At Healthy Paws, identifying a pre-existing condition is simple! If it's an accident, illness or injury and the symptoms didn't occur before enrollment, you're covered! We sorry your pet is ill and hope he gets better soon!

My dog Mojo scared his mommy quite a bit when he tore his CCL at 3 years old :( He had to to have a very expensive surgery @$4500! We luckily chose the $250 yearly deductible and 90% reimbursement policy with Healthy Paws Insurance. So, we didn't have to worry about making the choice to get him the best care. Healthy Paws processed his claim quickly (within 2 weeks normally) & got us a check back. Thank goodness we had insurance. I am not sure what we would have done without it. Afterwards, they even sent me an email to ask how he was doing after surgery. We appreciate them caring and checking in on him. He is young and strong and recovering like a champ! I am sure in a few weeks he... Read More
