Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I have a great experience with Healthy Paws and i have been telling all my friends about it! I know medical cost can be expensive thus i bought the insurance the first day i got my puppy. One day, i saw him won't open his left eye and he seems to be in pain. I look at his eye and it's super red. I took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with corneal ulcer. The doctor gave us some meds and we came back for a follow up visit 10 days later. Unfortunately his eye condition didn't improve. The vet suggested we took him to the ophthalmologist (I didn't even know that there's such thing for pet!!) and sure enough, he needs a surgery. So, we did a surgery on same day...Thankfully he is... Our beloved dog Sydney ate something in our neighbor's yard and became very ill with diarrhea and vomiting with subsequent severe dehydration. He was hospitalized requiring x-rays, ultrasound, IV treatments and the like for a week. After he was sent home, he required antibiotics for the next 10 days with rest. Thank goodness I purchased Healthy Paws the day after we received our puppy! We had no idea then how essential pet insurance would be in our future. Healthy Paws' process from beginning to end is easy, straightforward, and reimbursements can be made by direct deposit. With the cost of treatment so astronomically high today, no one should be without pet insurance, and we... Read More

Hello everyone, I am honestly very disappointed about their service and the way they attend the claims. It has been almost 3 weeks since I put my claim, I have sent the records of my dog more than 4 times and the only thing I continue to receive from them it is a stupid email asking for the records when I have sent them more than 4 times. The truth I feel is that they are kidding me, and that this insurance is nothing serious. I want to know if I'm in the right place with a serious company or this is simply a way to scam customers. I'm very frustrated because you don't seem to process things. I would like to talk to someone who would give me a solution and know if according to the... Read More

chepe76 - We're sorry that your baby wasn't feeling well and apologize for the delay in processing your claim. All claim decisions are based off of your pet’s medical records and the signs/symptoms that are noted in those records. Most pet insurance companies including Healthy Paws use a pet's medical records to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions which would keep us from approving a claim. We appreciate your efforts in providing your pet's medical records. Your claim was processed and you should be receiving your Explanation of Benefits in the next 24 hours. Give your baby a big hug from us.

I can not say enough great things about Healthy Paws! My dog has recently been diagnosed w a heart based tumor and I’m so thankful I didn’t have to make any decisions based on money! In the last 2 months, I think I’ve sent in 10 or so claims, every one of them have been processed and paid within 2 days. Every pet owner should have pet insurance and I highly recommend Healthy Paws!!!

After years of having my dog covered by healthy paws for the first time my dog had an injury on his back that required a trip to the emergency vet hospital. First time I file a claim with the insurance and to my disbelief, they are asking for so much paperwork and non existing doctors “notes” that it makes it impossible to get coverage/reimbursement. To my disappointment I just realized that I paid for a useless insurance for years with absolutely no benefit. What a scam. Watch out. My rating is -10.

jjgiomayra, We are sorry that your baby hurt his back and we hope that he is feeling better soon. All claim decisions are based off of your pet’s medical records and the signs/symptoms that are noted in those records. Unfortunately, we cannot find your account in our system with any degree of certainty using the limited information in your review. We would really like to provide you with more context and assist you in the processing of your claim. Healthy Paws has always been efficient and timely in processing and paying my claims. I have never had a single dispute with them, and they are by far the best pet care insurance I have ever used. I've been a customer with numerous animals for years.

I highly recommend Healthy Paws pet insurance!! Ive used other pet insurance companies in the past and truly appreciate everything about Healthy paws! They have a simple claims process, just snap a photo of your invoice! They are VERY fast at processing the claims and getting the money back to you! But one of my favorite things about this company is the personal care they show toward my sweet dog. He had two TPLO surgeries this year. Each time they sent an email asking about how his recovery was going and mentioned hoping my other dog was doing well too. They took the time to show they care and I appreciate them for it. The monthly cost is very reasonable and even though they don’t cover... Read More

I am very happy with Healthpaws insurance. I have had it for all my dogs for years. Easy to file a claim on line and prompt reimbursement. If you have any questions it is easy to contact a person and get a response.

Easy to work with and quick with claims. They checked on my dog after her surgery and were able to pay the vet directly. The two tplo surgeries were really hard to go through but they made it easier. I recommend them to anyone with an active dog like mine!
