Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

These people stink. Most everything on a bill is not covered. They continually ask for medical records over and over, even if you recently submitted. Simply not worth the cost.

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
timpanob - We're sorry that you are not satisfied with your plan. We do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the plan documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee (vet exam, emergency exam, recheck or consultation). Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. Of the claims that were submitted and not covered, they fell into one of the limited exclusions listed above. All claim decisions are based off of your pet’s medical records and the signs/symptoms that are noted in those records. Most pet insurance companies including Healthy Paws use a pet's medical records to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions which would keep us from approving a claim. We appreciate your efforts to provide us with those records, but we're still in need of some missing information. Once those records are received our team can process your claims.

I purchased Healthy Paws insurance a few years ago, when we got a second dog. I read reviews and chose Healthy Paws based on them. I have not been disappointed! Their website is easy to navigate, the policy was easy to set up and all of the terms are outlined. You can choose from different reimbursement percentages. I chose a 90% reimbursement. I have had to use it several times for one of our dogs, most recently when he ran into the road and was hit by a car. I uploaded the info they asked for and they responded within a day, asking for additional info if they needed it. I uploaded that and they again responded within a day. I had all of the documentation to them on a Tuesday afternoon,... Read More

This is the most unpleasant customer service experience I have ever had. After no email, phone call, or physical mail notification that my payment didn't go through, they canceled my account. We registered my puppy at under a year, and now, as an almost 2 year old lost all that time, money, and benefit of getting in at a young age because the company failed to reach out for a new form of payment. After being on the phone with 3 reps, one being disconnected on the healthy paws line, we were told we 1. cannot reactivate our account to receive the same rates/benefits since that is "fraud" after it was canceled (without notice to us might I add) and 2. Cannot even start a new account with them... Read More

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
kmheid - We're sorry that your pup wasn't feeling well. A Healthy Paws plan is continuous until either canceled by the policyholder or if there is non-payment of premiums. We understand that there are times a policyholder's credit card used on the policy could be lost, compromised by fraud or that there may be a change in bank accounts, expiration date, etc. In a case where a credit card transaction for premium payment is declined, we send two emails to the policyholder informing them of the issue using the email address on their account, we re-try the credit card on file two more times and then mail a notice via the postal service of cancellation prior to the cancellation effective date. If a pet parent determines they want to re-enroll, insurance regulations require we follow the approved rates and rating rules approved by that state’s Department of Insurance at the time of new enrollment. These rates take into account the cost of treatment, advances in veterinary medicine (including specialty and emergency care), your individual pet’s breed, gender, age and other factors, within the region your pet resides. We’re sorry to lose you as a policy holder and hope your baby is feeling better.

I am extremely grateful to have purchased insurance through Healthy Paws for my baby girl. I have been using them since 2015. They are extremely responsive and it's easy to submit a claim. I have never had a problem and the reimbursement is very quick. I downloaded their app and all I need to do is take a picture of the invoice and click on "Submit". That's it! I now don't worry about costs and I can focus on the health and well being of my furry baby. Right now we are dealing with some serious issues and have had quite a bit of expenses. It's such a relief to not worry about money and only focus on my girl getting the help she needs. I think they are exceptional!

I have never had pet insurance in the past, but I decided to take the plunge back in March/2021. A month ago, when my pup had been attacked I was SO grateful I had it to help with the vet bills. It was so simple to sign up originally, and so easy to file a claim. I've had incredible customer service and have been very impressed with the speed with which my claim was processed. Not to mention, a very thoughtful follow-up email we received checking up on our pup's recovery! I'm truly impressed with Healthy Paws and so grateful for them through this challenging time!

Dear Healthy Paws, I am 68 years old, disabled and on social security. The love of my life is in your care. My heart is in your hands. Without Healthy Paws, my little boy, Dude, would have had to be euthanized because I could not have afforded the doctors who are healing him. I live a simple life. It’s just Dude and me, 24/7 buddies. We wake up together, walk together, play together and fall asleep peacefully together. When Dude started having unexpected problems, Healthy Paws was right beside me, making it possible to pull him through. I would have been shattered without Healthy Paws. I was prepared to exhaust all my meager savings to keep Dude alive. I was prepared to... Read More

This is the best company I have ever had for my pet insurance. Unlike other companies I have dealt with, this company pays out your claims promptly and without endless excuses to reduce the amount of the payments. When you sign up for a 10 percent deductible, you get back a full 90% of your vet fees. Other companies I have dealt with manage to come up with various exclusions bringing down their claim payments to only around 50% on a 90% plan. In fact, I recently had vet bills of over $30,000 dollars for my two sick dogs, one receiving cancer treatments and the other needing major knee surgery. Healthy Paws paid me the full 90% of some very expensive claims. They even sent an email asking... Read More
