Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

This is by far the best pet insurance you will find out there. After having a few bad experiences with other companies we decided to switch to Healthy Paws after doing a lot of research. Best decision ever. Our crazy beautiful dog Suzy was getting ill since she was little. Sadly, a month ago she passed away being pretty young, doctors did everything they could, we ended up spending 4000 dollars in the process to save her. All of our claims to Healthy Paws went very smoothly and quick, their mobile app to submit the claims is the best, just start a new claim, take a picture of your invoice, and within 2 weeks you'll have your refund in the mail, amazing. We even got a card signed by all... Read More

I've had good experiences with this insurance. The one downside is that they don't cover the "examination fee" which is a bit frusterating so for example if you pay $50 a month plus the $50 examination fee that's $100 out of pocket before things start being covered.

Healthy Paws is an excellent choice for pet insurance. The customer service team is ALWAYS courteous, knowledgeable and especially excel with their very prompt claim service. I did extensive research when I was looking for pet insurance and found them to have the best ratings and reviews. I just had an unfortunate health care issue with my yorkie. My yorkie, Bentley, was in such pain and distress and it was so troubling and I felt helpless so rushing him to his doctor was my priority. The doctor and hospital expenses were astronomical to me just being recently retired. Of course there was no hesitation on my part to pay for the necessary care but in the back of my head I kept... Healthy Paws Pet insurance is fantastic! Our puppy was diagnosed with a tumor and we had to make multiple hospital visits and 2 surgeries, apart from scans, blood work, etc. and Healthy Paws was very quick and efficient in the handling of the claims. No hidden terms & conditions here!! It was great that we did not have to worry about money and only had to focus on getting our puppy healthy again. Highly recommend to anyone who has a pet. Thank you Healthy Paws!

I wanted to again say that Healthypaws is the best My Corgi has bigtime back problems which have required surgeries to prevent complete paralysis. He would not do well at all as a handicapped dog and the choice was really one of life or death. Knowing that I could afford to do these surgeries means the world to me and Healthy Paws was both compassionate and very responsive.

I recommend Healthy Paws to every dog owner I meet! Our Bichon Frise, Abbi who is almost 2 years old, became very sick. I can not imagine going through her illness without insurance. She was admitted to emergency three different times. The hospitals and tests ran thousands of dollars. We are so grateful that Abbi had Healthy Paws on her side! Everything about your company rocks. Great customer service, easy claims process and speedy reimbursement.

We have been Healthy Paws members since 2012. Currently our three dogs and two cats are all enrolled. We have had to file multiple claims on our dogs over the years and remain impressed and thankful for the speedy processing and reimbursements on these claims. Never once has any claim been challenged or denied. Staff has always been professional and compassionate. We have referred family and friends to Healthy Paws as well. Marianne Gallagher

Healthy Paws has been a lifesaver. After thoroughly researching pet insurance options, Healthy Paws seemed to be the best fit for our needs and budget. I had hoped, of course, that my pet would be healthy and would never need to use the coverage. But about a month ago I learned that my dog had suffered life-threatening kidney damage as a result of Lyme disease. The treatments have not been extravagantly expensive, but enough to make me wonder how I was going to afford it. Fortunately, Healthy Paws came through for me, and I have been able to get the best treatment possible for my dog without worrying so much about the cost. Their customer service has been friendly and helpful, and they... Read More

After doing quite a bit of research on pet insurance, my family and I decided on Healthy Paws because of the reviews. After having submitted a few claims for our dog, I have seen first hand how excellent Healthy Paws really is. There are many reasons why I have recommended Healthy Paws to all of my pet owning friends, but the primary reason is because the process is seamless. The last thing one wants to deal with when your pet's sick is a complicated and time consuming ordeal for getting claims submitted and reimbursed. Healthy paws has created an app that makes it even easier. Not to mention the coverages/plans are extremely reasonable and superior to any other pet insurance on the... Read More
