Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I'm not one to post reviews, but I must post this because Healthy Paws is the best pet insurance I've ever experienced - and they stand behind everything they say on their website. To say they are a lifesaver is an understatement. When I researched pet insurance for my french bulldog, I chose Healthy Paws because of the unlimited lifetime benefits, no restrictions on potential breed issues, and great feedback regarding customer support. First, my Frenchie has serious on-going allergy issues - covered. Last month, he ruptured a disc in his back and needed major surgery - covered. (Of course, coverage depends on your deductible and plan. But I'm taking thousands and thousands of dollars my... Read More

When my husband and I adopted our puppy we were told by so many people to look into pet insurance. I wasn’t convinced it was necessary but my husband was insistent that we get it. After looking into a few companies we decided on Healthy Paws. Applying for insurance was a breeze and I felt better knowing our dog was protected. After a month my puppy broke her toe in 3 places at the dog park. From the moment we submitted the first claim I was extremely satisfied. The process was so easy and convenient, you snap a picture on your phone and you’re done. You receive your refund check in a matter of days. When we submitted our first claim our vet’s office was required to send our puppy’s... Read More

My puppy was diagnosed with a abnormally in her skull. We had to spend a lot of money with MRI and a brain surgery. We had no problem have a reimbursement from Healthy Paws, the whole process was very easy, we could scan the receipt and send it using our phone, 5 days after reviewing the case they sent us a check. I highly recommend Healthy Paws for any pet owner.

Don't let all those reviews that claim this is the best pet insurance company by far as they are scammers just like all the rest. My dog had a terrible allergic reaction to something and his face swelled up. We took him to the vet and of course the vet has to examine him to better understand what course of treatment he needs to have. Well they don't cover that because its considered an exam. That's just BS. It wasn't a wellness visit. For that reason alone they get a star rating. If I could do zero stars I would. They keep getting richer as the pet owners keep funding their wallets

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Ken - Healthy Paws makes every effort to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee (vet exam, recheck or consultation). Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page or in the sample policy that is also on our website. By making the office visit (vet exam or consultation) part of the pet parent's financial responsibility, it allows us to offer a complete accident and illness plan at an affordable monthly premium. The office visit is not covered whether you go to a general practice veterinarian, specialist, or emergency hospital. We did provide coverage for your pet’s medication and hope Hunter is feeling better.

Healthy Paws is such a great insurance company for my dog. After looking for insurance for many months, I have decided to give Healthy Paws a shot and I love it. They have such a great customer service!! They would check on my dog after his major surgery, send me E-mail asking how he is. They would help me contact my vet to get the claim done as soon as possible, when I was busy. Healthy Paws is not just all business but personal.

These guys at Healthy Paws have been amazing. They enrolled my Charlie when he was 8 years old (no other insurance would take him). It literally takes me 5 clicks and a photo to submit a claim on their app and I am getting the check my mail within few days. Now my baby has been diagnosed with cancer. I reached out to Healthy Paws to confirm coverage and got an email back that almost made me cry - they hope Charlie will heal and "of course" he is covered for surgery and radiation and chemo and they send their love. UNBELIEVABLE. I am so grateful that within this family tragedy, financial concerns are out of the equation due to this amazing insurance. THANK YOU HEALTHY PAWS!

Healthy Paws has been one of the best decisions we've ever made. Unfortunately our dog has a lot of food allergies, which has caused a lot of vet visits and medical bills. Healthy paw has been very convenient and easy to use. I upload a picture of the statement using the app and within a week we receive a check.

My dog Checkers, the white brindled pitbull mix had a bad misfortune of having Osteoarthritis and eventually ending up having a torn ACL.On my dogs journey for treatment,he had been on OA meds,Adequan shots and pain meds that were covered by Healthy Paws.It was such an easy process,I just e-mailed them my pet invoice and within hrs.they sent me a reply with explanation of coverage and a week later I get my refund checks in the mail. Checkers ended up having surgery for his torn ACL and Healthy Paws responded right away to my e-mail stating they will cover 80% of the surgery invoice cost.Which is a big help considering it was a lot of money if I would just have to pay it out of pocket. But... Read More
