Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I cannot recommend Healthy Paws more highly. I'd give them 10 stars if I could! We had only been a customer for a little over a year when our dog, Ruger, got loose and injured both of his knees. Turns out the big guy tore BOTH of his CCLs and needed surgery on each leg. Healthy Paws was right there with us and processed our claims before the credit card payments were even due. Dear friends, my little Louie left us for heaven. From day one last year when I contacted healthy paws for assurance Louie was already 10, Healthy paws was the best. When Louie got sick, after a major surgery few months ago, all the follow up every week sometimes twice a week at my wonderful vet. Healthy paws my doggie insurance stick to the contract and honored all the refund allocated to the surgery and follow up. Thank you to all the staff, Denise, Amanda, Lindsay,Niki, Lana, Madisyn, for following up by phone, email, all that time. And also for your sympathy card. Without my wonderful vet. Doctor Kwoun ( Irvine , CA) I will have not know about you. You are the best insurance... Read More

When I think of insurance I just see it as another bill to pay. When I picked my puppy up for the first time and brought him home, just the look in his eyes screamed trouble. I scoured the internet for a solid two weeks reading reviews and their full policies. By the time I came down to two it had been a month and I needed to make a decision. HealthyPaws came up as a solid top-tier contender in a majority of the reviews I read and their policy was very clear and comprehensive. I purchased the insurance and for 3 years never came close to using it but it provided a sense of safety if anything were to happen to my pup. Sure enough at a routine visit the vet diagnosed a knee condition and... Read More

We have had Healthy Paws insurance on our pets for several years now. I've had other insurance plans in the past, but this one is the best. They make it so simple to submit claims and they turn their reimbursement back quickly. Most importantly is their coverage for our pets. We have two senior rescues. We got them insurance immediately and HP covers everything. Our Maggie developed osteosarcoma which is a terminal cancer. We were able to get her top of the line treatment, including innovative new radiation protocols thanks to Healthy Paws. Our other senior, Jack just had a toe amputation and they even called a week later to see how he was doing. Better service than my personal... Read More

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance made an incredibly scary and difficult time more manageable by allowing us to focus on what really mattered--getting our puppy better--and not worry about the large vet bill we received. Our 6 month old French Bulldog puppy ingested a foreign object and in the process of trying to throw it back up gave herself aspiration pneumonia. She had to spend the night in the emergency room on oxygen and undergo several xrays. Once her lungs were healed, a different vet had to remove the foreign object. Thankfully the second vet was able to remove the object with a scope, rather than surgery. This being our first dog, we were very scared. Understandably, the bill for... Read More

After some very expensive medical costs in the last year of our previous dog's life, we were very interested in getting some sort of health insurance for our new adopted pittie mixes. After a bit of research it seemed that Healthy Paws was the best thing going. For a very reasonable monthly cost they will cover 90% of most any medical issue that comes up - not including the normal basic maintenance that we all should provide our pets. It can't be overstated how that essentially eliminates any worry about not being able to afford to do the right thing if a serious accident or illness effects your pup. Particularly if you have an active dog that likes to experience life to his or her... Read More

Best investment I could have made. I had a scare with my Crosby one day and had to take him to the hospital. I knew that his stay was easily going to go to exceed $1,000, but because I had Healthy Paws as his insurance, I didn't have to worry. They took care of everything and my bill shrunk to only a couple hundred. Thanks so much to Healthy Paws. You helped save my boy.

We adopted our dog Sprocket in Tucson, AZ while traveling in an RV. Included in his adoption fee, was a veterinarian statement attesting to his good health. We purchased insurance from Healthy Paws because we are retired and thought it would be better to pay a monthly fee rather than risk a large expense if Sprocket ever had a health issue. Due to his young age, I thought it would be many years or maybe never, when we would actually need to use it. I sure was wrong. As it turned out, he became ill and it was determined he had a congenital heart defect and would need surgery. Even though we have only had him a few months, he is the light of our lives and we would have incurred whatever... Read More
