Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My poor guy was suddenly diagnosed with IVDD and needed surgery pretty quickly.. I had already met my deductible for the year so Healthy Paws paid 90% of my pups $7,000 surgery. If it weren't for this company I'm not sure where we'd be with my pup. He's only 6 and has so many years left I just couldn't see not doing everything possible to help him. Someone from Healthy Paws also checked in on my pooch after surgery and has been processing the claims for him very quickly. I wish it didn't take so long to get the reimbursement checks but at least they're reimbursing! I used to have Trupanion and they were top rated... They've become the type of insurance that nitpicks at every little... Read More

Our husky chipped a major tooth accidentally and it caused him a lot of pain to eat on the right side of his mouth. When our vet dentist told us the cost to get a root canal and crown, we were shocked! Luckily, we had Healthy Paws and they walked us through the entire process step by step. It was our first claim, so we were nervous that there would be some issues along the way. However, Healthy Paws not only was extremely responsive and professional, they also reimbursed us within a couple days! We are extremely happy with our choice of insurer and have been recommending Healthy Paws to all our friends and family. Our vet dentist was so impressed by the insurer and he's been recommending... Healthy Paws provides great coverage with easy to understand policy. I had ASPCA Pet Insurance before this insurance and I wish I would have switched sooner to save thousands of dollars on my dog's cancer treatment. ASPCA had a per incident cap which I should have read more carefully. Remember always to read your policy thoroughly and it's easy to switch from one insurance to another if you are unhappy with anything. Healthy Paws reimburse claims very quickly and they do have the customers best interest in mind.

Healthy Paws is one of the best investments I've ever made. Before buying insurance for my puppy, I shopped around, and several of the resources I found gave Healthy Paws their highest ranking. So I bought a policy for about $45/month, assuming I'd never have to use it. I've had Welly for about a year and a half now. He's happy and healthy, but he's had a few medical issues, including a swelling in his neck that required surgery. Healthy Paws has been amazing--quick, responsive, and fair. You just scan the doctor's bill and email it to them, and they take care of the rest. Welly is now doing wonderfully. I hope I never have to use the policy again, but I sleep better... Read More

I got Healthy Paws a little over a year ago for my 4 year old Siberian Husky after she had already struggled with juvenile cataracts and seizures. We knew we didn't want to risk anything else happening to her and wanted her covered from then on. Since insuring our Husky she has had stomach problems and also has had a broken tooth that needed surgical extraction. Submitting claims to Healthy Paws is so easy and they reimbursed us a week later. The process has always gone smoothly which is so important because with the stress and worry about a sick pet, the last thing a person needs is hassle from the insurance company. I recommend Healthy Paws to my friends, family, coworkers and I... Read More

Our dog Duke age 10 months was recently diagnosed with Avascular narcosis of the right femor head which required major surgery to correct the issues he was having. Knowing this was a very expensive procedure ($3,000) we contacted healthy paws to see if this would be covered and were assured it would be. Duke had the surgery 8/17. I went to the healthy paws app clicked submit claim and within days they approved our claim. They did not require any further paperwork or any calls, they stood by us and a check was recieved in days less our 10% co-pay. A week went by and I even received an email from a team member checking Dukes status. I had this policy in place for 3 months and they have been... Read More

Healthy Paws made submitting a claim and redeeming benefits straightforward, hassle free and fast. The reimbursement amount was exactly what we expected based on our deductible and reimbursement level. No push back, no surprises, and a quick turnaround on the reimbursement check. We are really happy we made the investment in Happy Paws pet insurance.

I have a 2 year old Border Collie mix. She fell ill and dehydrated and refused to eat or drink. My vet ran tests and started an IV, but by afternoon, they didn't have the equipment that was needed to find out what was wrong with my dog. She was transferred to an emergency care hospital so that she could have an ultrasound and have 24 hour round the clock care. By running many tests we could eliminate several causes including blockage, so that we could avoid surgery. Between my vet clinic and the emergency services, my bill totaled over $2200. Since I had the peace of mind of Healthy Paws insurance, I was able to tell these vets to do whatever it took to save my little girl. I had... Read More

Healthy Paws is the best! Each claim that I have submitted is reviewed and processed very fast. I have submitted 3 claims in the last 6 months with no issues. My Yorkie poodle just had surgery, the claims was processed quickly and I received an email from the claims department asking how my dog was doing. Unheard of from an insurance company! As long as I have a dog I will have Healthy Paws!

When I got a new puppy five years ago, I decided that I wanted to have pet insurance on him, so that I would always have peace of mind if he required expensive medical treatments. I researched all the companies, noting the pros and cons of each. I was lucky enough to review Healthy Paws Pet Insurance, and I chose them over all the others. I have never been happier with any decision I have ever made. They are fast, fair, and caring. I can submit my expenses by phone in mere minutes, and they review everything within a week, and reimburse me according to my coverage. They never fail to ask me about how JollyMon is doing, and to express concern for his health and healing. He recently... Read More
