Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws has been a wonderful choice for our family. Claims are paid promptly and accurately. Healthy paws has helped us get much needed medical care for our furry family member with little concern for the cost, just concern for our sweet doggie.

Having had dogs since 1986 we decided to investigate pet insurance for the first time when we adopted two new puppies early this year. We looked at the four leading companies and HealthyPaws best fit our needs and had the highest customer satisfaction. Unfortunately one of our pups had to have bilateral knee surgery at ten months. Our choice of HealthyPaws proved to be the correct one. The claim was filed online, they requested one additional document which the vet emailed to us, we added the additional information online and the claim was approved. All in twenty four hours. We have the $100 yearly deductible and 70% reimbursement policy for $25/month/dog (YorkiPoo).

Heathy Paws has had great customer service and has been clear and helpful in ensuring my dogs cancer treatments were covered. If I hadn’t had insurance I would not have been able to afford the year of treatment she required. I’m so grateful to have had that final year with her thanks to the insurance and despite it being a stressful and scary time Healthy Paws made it much more manageable and the process to file claims was quick and easy.

I am so pleased that I decided and purchase Healthy Paws as my dogs pet insurance for Shiloh, 10 month old Austrian Sheppard. At 10 months old, Shiloh needed OCD shoulder surgery, and Heathy Paws has been great right from the beginning, from taking with customer service, submitting my claim and prompt payment of 80%. Best thing I did for myself and Shiloh was giving him good insurance to cover any unexpected situation as with the OCD surgery, and Healthy Paws was great to work with!.... Best thing you can due for your pet is to have Pet Insurance , Healthy Paws is just that!

My cat has been insured by Healthy Paws since she was a kitten, for almost 10 years now. When our monthly premium increased a substantial amount this year (from $34 to $61), I strongly considered canceling her policy because I was so frustrated with the huge jump in cost. I took more time to think about it and realized that I had never had bad experience with them otherwise, and that my cat was more likely to need costly medical care as she got older, so I stuck with the policy. THANK GOODNESS I STUCK WITH THE POLICY. A few months after the increase, my cat developed an obstruction that required emergency surgery to remove, then she developed severe sepsis following the surgery and almost... Read More

Alexis - We cannot thank you enough for taking the time to write your review. We do understand that no one likes any form of premium increase and that your's was larger than normal. We're glad you kept your policy so that we could continue to play a part in making sure your kitty had access to the best available medical care. Thanks for the kind words regarding our customer service and reimbursement process. We're so glad your baby is doing well in her recovery. Give her big hugs from us.

I would encourage just about every pet owner to get health insurance for their buddies, as it's not if but when they eventually will need some special medical care. We have had several Lab-mix dogs, all very active, who have needed joint procedures as they aged. I view the premiums as a form of health savings account for them. We've seldom had to file claims when they were young, but like most elderly, they need more in their latter years. It's just sensible to set something aside for those sad times-- the expense is that much less worrisome to deal with when a BFF is moving toward his or her last months with us.

We have had Healthy Paws pet insurance for approximately 6 years now. Their claims submission process is painless and they process the claims in a very reasonable time frame. So far we have gone through everything from ear infections to broken bones and foreign body blockages($$$$), with Healthy Paws. I am so glad we have this insurance because it gives us peace of mind knowing we can get good care for our pets when they absolutely need it. Thanks healthy paws for the outstanding service through all the years.

I am so glad that we decided to get Healthy Paws insurance for our dog on recommendation from friends. They are quick to respond to questions and the process to submit a claim for review could not be easier. Following a surgery or unexpected vet visit is always stressful and the last thing I want to do is discuss insurance logistics over the phone. The Healthy Paws process is so simple, I upload my invoice and they review quickly. Their response is very clear and professional on what they are reimbursing and why. We are so thankful to have pet insurance when we’ve encountered unexpected and expensive vet visits! I highly recommend this company, they are easy to work with and we have been... Read More

First time to buy Dog insurance and we were a little nervous about it. But the monthly cost isn't too bad. We already had to file our first claim. We had our reimbursement in our checking account before our dog had her stitches out. It was very easy to file a claim. We made a good decision with Healthypaws.
