Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My dog suffered a catastrophic injury a month ago - with damage to his spine that resulted in partial paralysis. He was in pain, and we knew there was a difficult road in front of us. Healthy Paws was supportive from the start, allowing us to make the best decisions for our pet rather than having to worry about the costs. This made a world of difference - we took an aggressive course of action and a month later our dog is making a miracle recovery. If not for Healthy Paws, we would not have been able to take the approach we did, and so along with the amazing vets who have cared for him, we have Healthy Paws to thank for the ongoing recovery of our buddy. Backed by Chubb, I always... Read More

Based on advice from a friend, we have had insurance for our pup Anabel since we adopted her almost 6 years ago. We initially had coverage with Pets Best, and though we had no complaints about them, we never filed a claim, so didn't test their system. After a couple of years, we changed to Healthy Paws because they have no claim limits and we felt that if we needed to file a claim, there was a good chance it would be a big one. Anabel is very active and spends a lot of time hiking with us (typically at least 50 miles per week). We recently filed our first claim, and, as we expected, it was a doozy! Anabel was bitten by a neurotoxic rattlesnake and the antivenin she needed came to more than... Read More

Anne - Thank you so much for all the kind words regarding our quick and efficient claims process and for taking the time to share Anable's scary snakebite story. We understand just how scary and stressful it can be when one of our fur babies is sick or injured, which is why having pet insurance is so very important. We are very sorry to hear Anabel had to go through such a scary ordeal, and hope that she doesn't have any more run-ins with rattlesnakes! Please give her another big hug from us!

We have been extremely satisfied with our Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. Our dog tore his CCL ligament and required major knee surgery. It was a very stressful time, but having great coverage was a huge help!! Several months later, the dog decided he should eat a corn cob (and by eat, I mean practically inhale about 5" of corn cob in about 3 seconds flat). So happy to report that after much stress and an endoscopy, my crazy dog is fine - with extra thanks for coverage that allowed us to get quick and thorough treatment. Buy this coverage. They pay what they say they'll pay, and they do it quickly!!

Our four year old golden retriever developed frightening body tremors last week. On the advice of our local veterinarian, we rushed him to a veterinary neurologist, suspecting poisoning or meningitis. It turned out to be meningitis. :-( Our poor pup was in doggy ICU and tended to around the clock until the doctors were sure he was going to pull through. Not once did we question whether or not we could afford his care, knowing we had him insured through Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. Having the comfort of being able to make the very best decisions concerning our pet's care is of utmost importance. We submitted our claim, and within one week received approval for reimbursement. I consider... Read More

I have paid for insurance on my 2 cats for about 7 months. They were both neutered when I adopted them as 5-6 month old kittens. I took one of my cats to his veterinarian in July and submitted documents to the company. They emailed me about a week later wanting “ALL” his medical records which I sent. Another week and they again ask me for his records. I called the company and spoke with a nice man who said he’d make a note that the records I sent were all I or the doctor had. He had only been to the doctor for one problem and that was the only time he’d been to the vet since I adopted him. Another week goes by and I get another email asking the same thing. I call and speak with a woman... Read More

When we brought our baby pug home five years ago, we researched pet insurance plans and decided on Healthy Paws. It was the second best decision of our lives (the first being our pup). Our precious pup has had many health crises over the years and Healthy Paws has been with us every step of the way. They have resolved every claim and shown nothing but extreme care and dedication to keeping our pup healthy and safe. They follow up with her recovery with personalized notes. When we brought our second fur baby home, we were offered a reduced rate at another company. We would never consider any other insurance. For us, when it comes to the care of our pups, there will only ever be the... Read More

Lauren - We couldn't agree more that having Healthy Paws pet insurance is one of the best decisions a pet parent can make when bringing home a new pet. Puppies can be very destructive, and curious which is why having pet insurance for those unexpected tummy issues and possible obstructions is always a good idea. Thank you for the kind words regarding Healthy Paws and your experiences over the last 5 years. We are so pleased you have been so happy with your Healthy Paws coverage and service. Please give your pups big hugs from us!

I wish every company was as customer-focused as Healthy Paws. They are the gold standard and absolutely amazing! My dog has been very expensive throughout his life. Emergencies, surgeries, specialists, tests, medications-- for the past 9 years, Healthy Paws has always covered all of it and very quickly I might add. It is wonderful to know that I'm able to provide my dog with the best care without having to worry about being completely broke and paying off the debt for years to come (been there, done that). They aren't like other insurance where they have all these loopholes and asterisks regarding what they will and won't cover. They don't cover the exam portion of the bill, but... Read More

I've been using HealthyPaws for years and they've always been great. Super responsive and quick at getting reimbursements over. The plan is easy to understand, and the detailed breakdown they send whenever a claim is processed is really beneficial. On top of that, when my pet has been sick they've sent personalized reach out to check on him and make sure he's okay (without it affecting my bills). I cannot recommend them highly enough.

I had never owned a dog before, but 5 years ago I decided to adopt, NORI, a dog from my local shelter. A friend suggested that I get pet insurance and recommended Healthy Paws. It was the best decision I could have made! In June 2020, I noticed a cancerous tumor growing on Nori's left nipple. It was a sarcoma so we decided to perform surgery to remove it immediately. Because of the aggressive nature of NORI's cancer, it was recommended that we see an oncologist after surgery. NORI is doing well, but she sees the doctor for blood work once a week and has chemotherapy treatments every 3 weeks. As you can imagine, the vet bills would have piled up if I was not insured by Healthy Paws.... Read More
