Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

The AMS warranty is a pretty good safety blanket against the evils of homeownership. I have used them repeatedly for several items and w/ the 75 copay and 61.00 month fee. I can say that I have probably saved a few bucks. The talent of the service provider isn't always the best, but I guess overall there is some comfort in knowing that I have something in place for those unforeseen incidents.

American Home Shield home warranty came with the purchase of our new home. We used their services twice so far, both for plumbing issues (leaky toilets and laundry hookup and clogged kitchen drain). In both cases, service calls were scheduled within few hours of requesting service online. Plumbers arrived within the scheduled time windows, and resolved our problems in a timely and professional manner. It is really convenient not to scramble to find a contractor when you need them. I may consider extending our coverage beyond the warranty period.

I like the fact that with a warranty the service people try to repair things rather than just replace automatically. My regular service provider was always recommending replacing the hvac. I knew with our units being less than 10 years old there had to be repair options but they never would try them.

On hold for very unreasonable amounts of time. I have been on hold for up to 2+ hours!!! I don't care what the number of calls you receive, long holds are NOT exceptsble! The service is nothing to write home about. I am being charged for a service call that the guy did not even step inside of my home I had to jump through many hoops and the issue is still not resolved! I just got off of the telephone with one of your Reps, after waiting over 30 minutes. Wait time again is unexceptionable! The person told me that until the service person replies to their voice messages or emails saying that I paid him (sensa-air) when he came to my condo, they cannot remove the $75.00 charge that I... I had American home shield for a few month, recently I had to make a claim regarding a faucet problem, Tech come to home look at it and take picture,He says that he densest have the part and has to get authentication from American home shield to authorize the work order, after 1 hour I hear from them that this work order is not covered and is not a normal wear and tear and i forced the faucet to be broken. They said that i still have to pay trade fee ($75.00). so I am screwed, dont have the bathroom and still have to pay, why u pay for the service that u can not even use, choosing this company was the biggest mistake of my life.I do not recommend them to anybody

Phone wait times are unacceptable, being 60 minutes or more on average. Many claims have been an ordeal from beginning to end. Customer service is hit or miss. Getting issues resolved takes many follow calls until you get someone who is knowledgeable AND cares!

Most horrible experience I have ever had. I have been without A/C for practically a month and I can't get anyone there to call me. I have called y'all multiple times and I have held over an hour several times but usually have to hang up because my work will not allow me to hold any longer. The one time I did get y'all on the phone, the lady put me back on hold and about 45 minutes later I was able to speak with someone whom said they or the original service rep would call me back. Thats been over 3 days ago. This company has no problem collecting my monthly payments on time but leaves me without air for whats going on now close to a month. Run from these people....
