Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

My water heater stopped producing hot water almost 4 weeks ago and it still has not been replaced. A plumbing company showed up last week with the wrong water heater. Customer service keeps telling me that there is nothing they can do. To add injury to insult I am always having to wait 45 to 60 minutes on hold.

I have had a warranty with AHS for a number of years and for the most part the service has been "ok". I currently have an issue with my air conditioning and have needed to contact AHS numerous times. Each time I call I am on hold for anywhere from 45 minutes 1.25 hours. This is absolutely awful and totally unfair, I should not have to waste so much time trying to get a hold of someone. Over the last two weeks, I have had to call AHS well over 12 times, you do the math! Not to mention two of the times I called, I was on hold for over an hour, the CS Rep picks up the phone asks me to hold on and HANGS UP on me by accident but, they DON'T call back! Horrible Customer Service! I am... Read More

I had an AC company come to look at the AC & a plumber come to fix a pipe. The plumber was awesome, great guy, I am referring him to friends already! The AC people are another story. The guy I dealt with was very condescending & had an excuse for every issue I brought up. Even called & asked if I still wanted them to come after I made an appointment, he couldn't be bothered & it was apparent. Very disappointing. I am now going to pay for an AC company to come.

Should be "0" stars. The vendor you have a contract in for HVAC in my area is the worst. Took 3 weeks to finally have them come out and replace a thermostat. Your AHS customer service was equally terrible. I was told if I didn't like it I could find my own HVAC company and MAYBE AHS would pay for it. Basically do the job I pay you monthly to do. AHS was no help at all and I was at the mercy of Total Air Care.

I had to wait on hold on the phone for over an hour every time I called. I was not given responsive action even though my air conditioner was broken in 95 degree weather. It took a month to resolve the issue and we finally purchased s new air conditioner. We did get a check for the part that was broken 2 weeks after we told them that is what we wanted. I will not renew this contract and I encourage everyone not to buy a policy from this company.

Called cause my dishwasher wasn't working, the guy they assigned to me took a week to even come out then when he did he said he didn't know what was wrong with my dishwasher. He then told me if I figure out what the problem was to call him and he could come back a week later cause he was going on vacation. I called again waited an hour to talk to someone told them what happened they scheduled someone else to come look at it. Then they charged me for the guy that came out that basically told me to fix it myself. When I called to request a refund they said since he came out they charged me and I couldn't have a refund. Dont use this company unless you like getting your money taken for... Read More
