Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

The contractors will ALWAYS charge you for stuff you don't need and that runs your out of pocket expense way up every time. You can not get through to speak with someone about a claim without waiting on hold a minimum of 30 minutes most times you're on hold close to an hour. I know that sounds like an exaggeration, but I swear it's not. AHS is a SCAM. STAY AWAY PLEASE.

What a rip off. I have called this company a total of 4 times for an air condition problem. The problem has never been fixed. We are renting the property and our renters are fed up, as they should be. Each time we call you, it takes 24-hours to be contacted and another 48 hours to be serviced. We have 2 contracts with you and they are about to be pulled. You should be ashamed to call yourselves a company who serves their customers.

My last service with AHS was horrible. Sears was my service provider for my refrigerator. No one called to set up an appointment with me to deliver my refrigerator they just called when they were on their way. They showed up at 9:30pm and Did not Leave my house until 11:30pm. I had to be at work at 3 am and my husband also had to go on a very long trip that he did not get to rest before leaving. VERY pissed off about the situation.

So I have a love/hate relationship with AHS. If all you need is your washer, dryer, refrigerator or other appliances worked on their great. If it's anything like your air conditioner or water heater (anything major) not so much. So this is a true story. July 2017 not a good month for the Coleman's. We had both our water heater and air conditioner go out within a few days. The fine print is a tricky thing and of course very few read it until they hear"sorry that's not covered " myself included. That was the water heater. We ended up going with a contractor that wasn't associated with AHS. Then the air conditioner. It was 25 years old and original to the house. We were under no delusion that... Read More

We've been American Home Shield (AHS) Customers for at least 5 years. o We had a washing machine call and a dryer call. The Technicians responded quickly and repairs were completed quickly - we were very pleased. o Our refrigerator failed on a Friday - and we logged a call immediately. The Technician was not able to respond for almost a week - we lost quite a bit of food and we lived out of ice chests for almost a week. The Technician was able to fix the refrigerator quickly once he responded and the repair was good. o Our pool pump failed on a Friday and the Technician responded by Tuesday, the next week. We were very pleased with the pool pump repair (it was the pump timer -... Read More

My AC needed repair at a time when it was 110 degrees outside! It took almost a week for someone to come & fix the problem. AHS initially sent a company no longer under contract with them (how does that happen?) and so i was left making most of the calls with that awful company and was on several long holds on the phone with AHS. So incredibly frustrating.

After 15 loyal years and now having built to three accounts, we can expect no pricing structure other than standard. Talks with three different sources within AHS have yielded three very arogant responses to our request for competitive pricing.

My experience with American Home Shield Warranty was very good. After moving into my home, the HVAC system quit working. As directed, I called their 800 number and followed the steps to get a repair person in. I was provided a case number and the name and number of the contractor AND the information that the contractor would be contacting me within 24 hours. LO and behold, ALL TRUE! A professional, experienced HVAC contractor called, we set up an appointment. Within a short period of time he diagnosed the problem and replaced the very old thermostat with a new one. This was a couple of months ago and all has worked well since then. AHS has contracts with well-rated, professional... Read More
