Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

On July 1st, I called in that my A/C was broken. I did not get get any response. On July 5, I had to call the assigned company to get any appointment. On July 7 at 4:30 pm a tech came by to diagnose the issue. It took several phone calls to American Home SHield and Total AIr Care to get this fixed. At least 3 different times, I requested phone calls from supervisors of both companies to help me. Not one call back. Finally, on July 21, 20 days after I called to report he issue, It was fixed. I live in Florida. The average outdoor temperature was 95 degrees and the interior temperature was 87 degrees. Needless to say this was an extremely uncomfortable and frustrating situation. All this... Read More

I call you on 08/08/17 and I was placed on hold for 40 minutes. I decided to hung up and call later. I called aging and I was placed on hold for another 30 minutes. I just want to ask about my home warranty cover because the explanation on the web PDF is not clear to me. I decided to contact a business directly to repair my garage door. I am very disappointed. More than an hour on the phone and nobody was able to answer.

I had a problem that came up when the gas company had changed the outside meter. When their technician turned on the pilot lights, he discovered leaks on the furnace gas valve and gave me a simple write up to have it repaired. I immediately got on the wed site provided by American Home Shield and reported it. It was answered promptly by email and by a phone call and a contractor was assigned. The contractor called me the next day to set up an appointment time and upon arrival he made a decision that he needed to replace the gas valve. He returned the next day with the new unit and changed. The technician took his time and made the correct changes that were needed in the gas line... Read More

I recently had A/C issues for the second floor of my home. American Home Shield promptly responded to my service request and contracted with Myers Comfort Specialists. The technicians at Myers Comfort Specialists were friendly and knowledgeable and quickly able to determine what was wrong with my A/C unit. However, from the time I first notified American Home Shield of the service request to the actual date of repair, it was almost three weeks. A large part of that was due to waiting to receive the part from the manufacturer, but even after Myers Comfort Specialists received the part, a technician was not available for almost another week. In the middle of summer when it was extremely hot... Read More

First of all..... The call wait time is EXTREMELY EXCESSIVE! Always more than 1 hour, even though the reps tell you to call late at night (which I'm doing right now at 10:35 pm PST)... still I'm waiting! Trying to get them to fix a clunking/squeal noise in my microwave is not covered.... I thought that they promise to fix and bring appliance to normal operation. Well..... I didn't buy this microwave with all of that noise, so why won't they fix it! They have charged my account with $200.00 that was supposed to be credited. Well it's been hanging around for three billing cycles and it's still there, and preventing me from scheduling service online. Therefore, I have to call in... Read More

Well, I can say that American Home Shield was a good company but that was a long time ago. That is not the case anymore. The wait to reach an operator is one hour and 40 minutes. They have hidden things in their contract. For example, they don't cover FREON OR ANYTHING toward the repair of your unit necessarily for a repair to pass inspection by the county. This should be illegal because companies should not be allowed to provide a service which does not follow government and county guidelines otherwise, they will place the people in harm's way. I called them to submit a claim after I have been paying AHS for about 10 years. my AC unit has a leak and they will only be willing to... Read More
