Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

So once again, American Home Shield has crap customer service at work again. I was on hold for about 2hrs the first time trying to get them out for an AC service. There was a $75 credit for services that was supposed to be used for this call. Looks like they "ACCIDENTALLY" forgot to apply it. Now, the only option is to call vs email? Yeah right! Stay on hold another 2 hrs?!?!?!

The telephone wait times are unacceptable. 1 hour is way too long. Especially when you are calling back on a tech that didn't know what he was doing.

First, I normally have to wait 50 minutes just to talk to someone. Second, they always seem to want to find the cheapest repair (even if it means paying more over the long run). I am a land lord, and using this warranty company takes forever even for a simple fix. So far my experiences with this company have been more bad than good.

At this point if i could give a zero rating i would. I have done business with ahs for close to 10 years and always had good and prompt service. This time however here is the time line: - called for ac service 2 + weeks ago, did not get scheduled with a provider for 5 days - calling to get an update takes > 1 hour each call, nothing is resolved - after about a week, a representative finally assigned a provider but the provider was from another state and did not answer his business phone when called nor answered his email or voicemail - ahs said if no one answers we could choose our own provider and they'll pay - when theassigned provider finally did answer, he could not come for another 3... I would like to add that American Home Shield Contacted me about my experience and I not only told the representative about what happened but I filled out a survey and detailed the experience. I was never contacted again. This was months ago. American Home Shield, do not reply to this review or the original one I posted (which I tried to edit but could not so I am posting this one) telling me you do not like unhappy customers and to call you about my experience. To add insult to injury, after I made AHS aware of what had happened they had the nerve to send me a letter saying they would not cover the same problem again unless I had it repaired at my own expense. Problem is... Read More

I wish there was a place for negative stars. American Home Shield is a sham. I called them about a plumbing issue. They sent out East Texas Plumbing (google them...they have horrible reviews). American Home Shield has had several customer complaints about this company and yet it is still the first one they send out. The person that came out was rude and unprofessional and without doing any real work determined that my main sewer line was collapsed and full of roots which is not covered by the warranty. East Texas Plumbing "determined" this using a manual hand operated snake. They didn't have a machine operated snake or camera equipment which is what is needed to accurately determine... Read More

I requested service for my dishwasher. After five separate service calls which included one assessment, two delivery attempts, one failed installment, I plumber, $200 in deductible payments (supposed to $100 per "issue"), over 240 minutes on the phone I have still had someone call and get this situation cleared up. I doubt that I would ever refer this company to anyone.

Good customer service. Works well with small claims . Replacing an appliance? Especially an AC /Heater unit? Not worth it . Contractors will cost you more than if you do it on your own. The covered cost is very limited. You end up paying quite a lot in "code updating" ,etc.

Call wait times are beyond ridiculous. The last 4 or 5 times I've called I had to wait 30-50 minutes to get a live person. If it doesn't change I will be going else where.

Having a home shield gives me peace of mind for the mechanicals of my home. Yes I have neede them for electrical issues, my heat pump, range and dishwasher over the years. Often it's hard to know who to call or how much it will cost. I can just make one call and know my problem will be resolved and I will pay a single service fee.
