Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I have used AHS on two occasions so far and both times and both were handled expertly and the services from both companies were expert, courteous and determination to complete a repair to my satisfaction. I would highly recommend AHS to anyone seeking this kind of protection of their property and I believe will be completely satisfied on the results.

The good part is that after paying our $100 a contractor was assigned quickly and called us. He recommended a new fridge. The bad news is that once he makes this recommendation the process is totally opaque. Online it just says that your service request has been completed (because the contractor has done his part). But I still don't have a fridge and hold times for the new appliance purchase numbers are > 4 hours. You've got to think they could reduce that if they wanted, it seems intentional to avoid paying out. Sketchy company practices.

I am sitting here waiting for follow up on my request for an update on my Dishwasher. The service provider that was dispatch was very professional and had serviced the unit before. He analyzed the problem and informed us that he would send a request the unit be condemned due to age and cost of repair. He indicated that we should hear a finding from AHS in an hour. He then said it might take a little longer due to Covid19. I waited a full day and then called him to verify they had submitted the condemnation. He said he had but he had not heard a reply. I then went on line and could only find a customer service phone number as a way to contact AHS. Calling I was told the wait time... Read More

We had this service, and they sent out a service company who was unlicensed and uninsured! We found this out when they inadvertently cut the water line to the icemaker resulting in $10,000 damage to our home. When we called AHS after finding out the contractor they sent was unlicensed and uninsured, their response was it wasn't their problem or job to ensure the contractor is licensed and insured!

AHS has the worst possible customer service - that is if you can get a hold of them. I have been trying to get my refrigerator taken care of for a month now and there is no way to talk to anyone or find out what is going on. I have been on hold for each call for at least 2 hours each time. This is the worst service I have ever had. This is no more than a scam.

The contractor arrived at the specified time. After checking our refrigerator he determined that the issue we had was UN-repairlable. He submitted his report the AHS and within 3 days we received an email about our options. We selected a cash payout from their web site. It indicated that we would receive the check in 10-14 business days, and we had to send them a sales receipt for the new refrigerator. The only problem is there are no instructions on how to send them the receipt. Nothing on their web site, etc. I attempted to call them but after an hour of hearing "we will be with you shortly" I finally gave up. Will try again and see what happens.

Up until recently, contractors selected by AHS have performed average quality work. Unfortunately, the contractor selected by AHS to repair a blocked bathroom sink drain line on 7/7/20 refused to perform any work (drain line needed to be snaked with an auger). He stated he could not perform any work because the sink trap had been removed. Note: No blockage existed in the piping between the sink and the drain connection at the wall. This confirmed the blockage existed further down the drain pipe behind the wall. Since water had backed up into the sink and was leaking from the threaded drain pipe connector going into the wall, I HAD to remove the sink trap in order to 1) stop water... Read More

They use shady contractors who will take too long to fix things then it should! Took 6 weeks and two companies to fix a gas dryer
