Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

My wife and I have been using First American Home Warranty for the past 10 months, knowing that our furnace was 35 years old and our water heater was 10 years old. When both finally went out in the middle of October, we called First American to make our claims. First American then contacted the contractors, of which are given 24 hours to call. After not hearing from the water heater company for 24 hours, we decided to call them. We played phone tag for about 3 days. Finally when someone did come over, the one-person company told us that he could not do it because we had a crawl space and it required a two man job. SO WHY DID FIRST AMERICAN SEND SOMEONE out to our house that could NOT do... Read More

Absolutely the worst! I have been without heat for 3 days because they cant find a contractor in my area. According to the less than caring representative I spoke with this delay is within allowable guidelines while they attempt to find a contractor. I would strongly suggest other alternatives for warranty providers. There isn't any sense of urgency or caring with this company.

Had a problem with the downstairs heatpump. The first call was handled quickly and the guy came out and said that the only thing wrong was a capacitor on the compressor. He took three days to come out in the middle of a South Carolina summer and only spent half an hour onsite. That fix lasted less than two months. Again it took three days for him to come out with me complaining until they had a cancellation. Now it was the coils, drain pan and drain pan pump. Drain pan and pump was not covered. They didn't want to pay for the work to put the new coil into the airhandler. While trying to get First American to cover the repairs, I never raised my voice, used foul language, nor got sarcastic.... Read More

Absolutely would not recommend this product to anyone. Save your money. You'd be much better off putting the $500 or whatever you paid for the coverage towards a new appliance. By the time you pay their service fee $75, have multiple contractor visits, and a non-functioning appliance for weeks, you'd have been better off putting that $500 towards a quick repair or replacement. Absolutely would not recommend.

Very dissappointed with the service and choice of vendors. in less than 5 years have had our garage door fixed at least 4 times always by the same vendor, bad service, bad attitude, argumentative, always comes and we are forced to place a follow up claim because of unresolved repairs, no feedback or eta's. Trying to get a hold of an american customer service rep is almost impossible always getting "help" from foreign people that are hard to understand. ***Latest claim was placed THREE WEEKS AGO- STILL UNRESOLVED!!!!!

I submitted a claim for my garage door cables and First American advised it was covered. Then when the technician arrived he contacted First American and they advised it was not covered. That day re-contacted First American, while the Technician was on site and they advised me not to pay the service fee, nothing more. The technician went ahead with the job and handed me a bill of $279 for the repairs. I re-contacted First American again and they now advised this job was not covered and had to pay the bill. I filed a claim with First American and they advised they would not honor my claim, even though they made an error, advising the job was covered. i contacted them and they... Read More

We have had problems with our air conditioning unit that we found out were not covered in the warranty. We paid the first service provider that First American sent out hundreds of dollars out of pocket to fix the problem. Two months later, the unit went out, and the second service provider said that the first one did not fix the problem. I am frustrated that the set line, an integral part of the unit, is not covered, and I will not waste time or money with any of their contractors who do not stand behind their work. We also had a call for a refrigerator repair. At first First American told us we had to make an appointment with Sears, and the first available appointment was THREE... Read More

Poor communication to customers. Although our contract date began on 9/6, we did not receive our contract in the mail until a few weeks later. During that time, we had an emergency plumbing repair that needed immediate attention. We went ahead and got it fixed, knowing we had the warranty. After talking to multiple representatives, they refused to cover the claim since it wasn't verified by one of their agents. If a customer doesn't have the contract, how are they supposed to know which actions they can/cannot take? Customer service representatives were rude and cut me off multiple times. Would never recommend. If I could give no stars I would.

Horrible company! Spent 3 weeks trying to get garage door repaired and when talking to rep and even online in writing they say that part would be covered but refused to tell contractor it is covered.
