Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

They tell me one thing and turn around and charge me or try to charge me for irrelevant items. Then after my wife talked to the manager for 30 min and didn't solve anything (silent at times, speechless), he still has the nerve to say "can i help you with anything else"

I have to laugh...The write up says California based...however when I call in I always seem to get someone in the Dominican Rep. (Book!) We purchased this coverage almost 10years ago when we bought our home. Our home is ild built in 1950, so we felt it was a justifiable coverage, and the 'if' factor seemed inevitable. Over the years we've had to use it on a few things, and everything seemed to go smoothly. UNTIL NOW. On 7/1/17 our washing machine broke. The appliance company who was assigned to our claim was MAC My Appliance Clinic. They came out on 7/8/17 to inform us we needed X,Y and Z, and they needed to submit it to First American for approval. 2-3 weeks later MAC returned to... Read More

Absolutely unsatisfied with my claim resolution! DO NOT PURCHASE COVERAGE! I opened a claim for my freezer door on August 10th, 2017. Following this claim,First American sent a technician from K &G to fill my claim for my freezer not working. Basically, the seal (or gasket) was replaced about a year and a half ago, but still failed to create a seal. Warm air enters the freezer, causing the freezer to freeze over and ice builds over the motor cover. The K & G technician that came out, Max, was great. He clearly explained to me what was going on with the seal, and why it was freezing. He said he was going to send photos with the report back to First American, and then gave me... Read More

By far the worst company i have ever had to deal with. Customer Service is at the bottom of their list. I have had about 3 claims with them in the past 7 years and none of them have been pleasant. Worst company ever

I had an issue with a garage door opener. I made an original service call 7/6/17 and they sent out a company/technician. That individual chose to try to "fix" the problem rather than replace the part/opener. When I called back 8/26/17, First American stated I would have to start a new service call because it was past 30 days. They rigidly enforced the 30 day rule when the original problem was not fixed.

Customer service is aweful. If you don't constantly stay on top of the contractor and First American, you'll never get the repair/replacement you need. Also, I've been on the phone for 46 minutes and counting, waiting to speak to a supervisor/manager. They refuse to allow the warranty holder to escalate the issue, and so nothing gets done in a timely manner. So frustrated....

Don't get fooled by the service First American promises. I have had a home warranty for a few years and had an air conditioner that has failed during the summer and winter several times. Each time the contractor makes the unit limp along until the next failure. This last time it failed during a heat spell (over 110 degrees). The assigned contractor could come out in 2 days so had stay home to wait but no one showed. They finally came and fixed it the next day but 2 days later it failed again. This time they said they couldnt come out until Monday (3 days later). First American could not find another contractor to help so we were stuck and had to stay in a hotel for 3 days. First American... Read More

We placed a service request on a toilet that would not stop running. The plumber assigned by FA was out within 3 business days, not great but it wasn't an emergency. He looked at the toilet and determined that due to its age (20 yrs) and condition it could not be repaired and should be replaced. We are in the middle of a remodel and didn't want a new one installed only to have it removed for the remodel. We opted for the cash out. After weeks of no response from FA I finally got a call from them. They offered a cash out of $51 for parts & labor!!! It is impossible to buy a toilet for $51 let alone pay a plumber to install it. What a scam! First American should be ashamed of the... Read More
