Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

We are Realtors and have had many different home warranties over the years for our personal homes. We also sell over 50 homes per year and buy home warranties for our clients. Our first claim with this company for our dishwasher has been a total disaster. 20 days into the claim we still have a broken dishwasher. The first repairman that First American sent out said the dishwasher was installed incorrectly collected his $60 service fee and left. Since then we confirmed with Bosch the manufacturer and the company that istalled the 18 month old dishwasher. The error code states it is a drain pump failure and we confirmed it is installed properly. We are still arguing with First American... Read More

Be very careful using this company. They play games and at the end you end up paying a lot of extras that they considered modifications. My story begins with a air conditioner unit coil going bad. I have the Plus plan, it "supposedly" cover labor and parts. The game the First American decided to play is since they have to cut the old coil out and install a new coil... they called it modification to the unit. At an addition cost of 150.00. If you ask any technicians that work with air conditioners how do you replace a coil, ALL of them tell you you will need to cut the old out and weld a new one in. So basically First American refuses to pay for the labor. I will put them in BBB with a bad... Read More

This company has been a joke. They hardly ever answer their phone or get back with us when we have issues. They find loop holes for anything and everything they can to not cover what they should. Also the companies that they send out for service calls always try and sell something or some service that is "not covered" and make it a mandatory part of the service call. We got and kept this warranty for two years due to the age of our air conditioning units, and have called them for electrical, plumbing and air conditioning issues and every service call has been the same. They have all been a fight for coverage along with extra money out of pocket on things that "aren't covered". I would not... Read More

They are they worst home warranty Company and by the way I am 48 years old and have never given a bad review in my life until now, I put up with a lot but this is unexceptable. Let see I have been with them for 2 homes for over 15 years, I sold one of my house almost a year ago and after multiple calls they are still charging my credit card, my other house has a pool and they keep sending people out without letting us know they are coming and there are people there under the age of 18 without supervision. That is not just a bad company that is illegal. On the pool they are making up reasons to decline it and I have paid another Company to diagnose and now have to fix it because the pool... Read More

This has got to be the worst home warranty program on the market. My first claim with them was a nightmare and I'm really thankful it occurred within the first month of me having a contract with them so I still had the right to cancel my contract. They denied my claim for AC repairs and me a elderly person living in a house that was upwards of 90 degrees in the house. The contractor they sent out misdiagnosed what was wrong and also lost or stole all the Freon I had in my unit. Not only did I end up paying for the repairs but I also ended up having to pay for over three hundred dollars worth of Freon to be put back in my unit. This warranty program is a scam to take you for every... Read More

Was with them for 5 years. Called this past Sept. because of waste-water system leaking sewer gases -- H2S, CH4 (both TOXIC & FLAMMABLE) -- into home. -- It took them several weeks to get someone out here. -- They then denied coverage because they "don't cover odors". -- Explained to them that the "odor" was not the problem, it was just one SYMPTOM of the actual problem: ww stack leaking toxic gases. THEY WOULDN'T BUDGE from their "odor" stance. -- When they called to ask why I did not renew this year, I asked if they would cover some hypothetical problems -- including a ww stack leaking sewer gases. They said they would. But their actual response several months earlier... Read More

I do not see how First American Homes Buyer Protection program could be #4 on your list. Unless the other companies are worse than First American. First American does not care for their customers. They hire companies who are ill equipped and have poor ratings on Yelp.com. I have been a customer with First American Home Buyers Protection for close to 15 years and have paid my premiums in full each year and before the due date. I've made 3 service calls in all this time...and 2 of the issues were a simple fix and resolved the first time. Now that It has been determined that I have a much larger issue with my plumbing, First American are finding reasons to deny my claim and will... Read More

Worst warranty company in the world!!!!! I have been paying them for two years and when time came to fix my issue it was a worse nightmare of my life. I had to make 30 calls and every time they tried to find a reason to deny my claim. In addition, their contractors were not very good. The fourth contractor was able to diagnose my problem but charged me saying that warranty company doesn't pay us enough so I had to pay to get me problem fixed. What a scam they are running. Shame on First American Home Buyer Protection. They are only protection their bottom lies. Stay away from them. In addition, there phone lines are very bad and its really hard to understand the rep on the other... Read More

It seems most items are not covered. We have made 3 claims over the last couple of years and each were determined by First American to be excluded from coverage. One was for an refrigerator that is located outside of the main home. The other was for our zoned HVAC system. Apparently the zone controller is not covered for some reason that was not disclosed. Apparently this is a common exclusion. the third was for our washing machine. It was claimed we abused the machine by over filling it and the coverage was waved. The fact that the bearings on the machine have failed is an extremely common occurrence with this particular machine was an argument that fell on deaf ears. It makes... Read More

By far one of the most unprofessional companies i have ever had to deal with. have spent over 50+ hours on the phone. with no results. The plummer that was sent to my house came fully unprepared to do the job and was going to have me send 3,000+ dollars to remove a wall to access a clogged shower valve. Prior to spending that amount of money i found a simple procedure on line that unclogged the valve with in 15 minuets. My water heater was also leaking per their contractor and my own contractor which they refused to replace. because of age??? So i replaced it and attempting to get reimbursed for the repair. I have made over 50 phone calls and followed their direction with no resolution... Read More
