Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Having HealthyPaws insurance has been such a blessing. My young dog recently developed IVDD. From the onset of this diagnosis, HealthyPaws has been expedient in responding to my claims, they have been helpful in answering questions and I NEVER feel as if I have to argue with them about something (which I did with my former pet insurance company who paid little to nothing). They are proponents of treating your dog (w)holistically and they actually seem to care about your pet. HealthyPaws has truly been a light in this dark tunnel of trying to treat this (which, btw, is a long process). It's a comfort knowing they are there!

HealthyPaws Pet Insurance was easy to enroll into and quick at giving a quote for each of my pet dogs. I recently and unexpectedly had an issue with my lab mix dog. He was diagnosed with IMHA - Canine Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia. He spent two days in the emergency hospital. The doctors ran several tests (blood work, x-rays, ct scans), on IV for his entire stay. Fortunately he was released and was sent home with prednisone and immune suppressants which are very expensive. He had to have another blood exam a week later. The entire cost totaled approximately $4,500. HealthyPaws paid approximately $3,900 of all the bills to present. They deducted my annual $100 deductible and... Read More

Healthy Paws has been a godsend to my family. I researched many different insurance companies when my dog was a puppy, and even had one sponsored by my own job’s insurance, but Healthy Paws stood out among the rest. Since I signed up for Healthy Paws, I have found myself thanking my lucky stars for them on many occasions. The service is reliable, I receive checks within a week or so, they review claims quickly and communicate updates efficiently. More importantly, I am so impressed with the customer service of this company, who engages with me on social media and has sent emails to see how Brutus is feeling after filing claims for a stomach illness. If you’re considering pet insurance,... Read More

I love this company and how they take care of my claims. They are so compassionate, professional and fast. My dog has had two TPLO surgeries and a renal cyst taken care of in less than 6 months. I file my claims and within 10 days I either have a check or a date for a check to arrive. I am so happy with this company and the service they provide.

We have been using Healthy Paws since day 1 for our pet Mochi. Recently she had major surgery and true to form, Healthy Paws dealt with her claims in their quick, efficient manner. The coverage is clearly explained in the policy and they also provide details on each claim. The other thing I really like is the app for submitting claims - just send in a photo of the vet invoice and they deal with all the rest.

Healthy Paws is hands down the BEST pet insurance! They have been extremely helpful and considerate. I have never had an issue and the coverage is amazing. My dog has recently had 2 major surgery’s and they have not only reimbursed me immediately for the costs but have checked up on him as well. I couldn’t be happier with the service and I highly recommend healthy paws!

The healthy paws claim process was super simple and paid quickly. There was no hassle along the way and they proactively reached out to the vets office to obtain medical records without us having to play middle man. They also followed up after Boomer's surgery to check in and see how he was doing, which we appreciated. Definitely recommend using them if you are on the search for a pet insurance provider.

Our pets are insured with HealthyPaws since we had them. We never had a problem with the refunds and they are super fast. In March '18 our dog swallowed a huge rubber piece.... He started vomiting and refusing to eat. After a lot of expensive exams the ER finally saw this rubber stuff in his intestine with an Ultra Sound. He went through an Emergency surgery and had part of the intestine removed. The bills were extremely high... almost 8000$ but we were at least not worried about the financial part because we were confident that Helathypaws would have refunded everything. In less than a week from the claim date we received the checks in our mailbox. I defintely reccommend... Read More

My baby girl Luna, who’s a energetic and fit, ended up needing TPLO surgery last, and my Healthy Paws insurance saved me from having to take out a big loan to help my girl. First there was the surgery costing $4300, and then we had months of rehab (approx. $100 per gym/water treadmill session). Through all of this Healthy Paws were there for us! Healthy Paws Pet insurance is definitely worth every penny, and I can not recommend them enough!

These guys are great. They pay promptly and respond to inquiries without trouble. They also go the extra mile to show care, like checking on our dog Tater after his surgery.
