Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Investing in pet insurance with Healthy Paws is the 2nd smartest decision we've made since becoming parents to our Golden Retriever (2nd only to getting our baby in the 1st place!) We did research on the top 5 Pet Insurance companies and ultimately decided that Healthy Paws was the right choice for us. Thank God we did! After 6 wonderful and healthy years our sweet boy was diagnosed with cancer. He met with the top specialists, had 2 surgeries and is in the process of beginning Radiation Therapy in the next week or so. With all of the tears, sleepless nights, recovery from both surgeries, etc... there was a lot of anxiety and fear within our family. With Healthy Paws we have been able... Read More

Healthy paws has been consistently supportive of my animals medical needs and very quick to respond. They made everything so quick and easy, I definitely could not have afforded the health care that my dogs received without them. Thank you!

I had been a been a customer of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for only three months when my puppy Lili suffered a serious injury to her left hind leg while playing with her sister. When I received the bills for the hospital and the surgeon, I was expecting the worst, but Healthy Paws stepped up and handled all of my claims promptly and courteously. I would not hesitate to recommend Healthy Paws to all of my friends and family.

Excellent insurance. Chose an 80/20 plan with a $250 deductible. A very clear and easy to use process with a phone app. We recently needed to use it for one of our labs who ruptured both ACLs. We were able to get both knees repaired and I can't recommend them enough. Claims submitted once, and payment is on its way. A great customer service line and even a note asking how Stella was doing.

We purchased Healthy Paws pet insurance for our 3-month old labradoodle three years ago. Little did we know at that time what a wise decision we had made! At four months old, our puppy began having seizures. After an MRI and spinal tap, she was diagnosed with Idiopathic Seizures. After these tests and a two-day stay in the hospital, you can imagine what the bill was! We submitted our claim to Healthy Paws and within a few days, received an email from Healthy Paws regarding the status of our claim and the process for viewing it online. In addition, a reimbursement check was quickly sent to us by mail. Because of our dog's seizures, she takes eight pills a day. We submit our monthly... Read More

Our 6 month old Boykin Spaniel required 3 emergent abdominal surgeries for an intestinal problem. We were blessed to have Healthy Paws pet insurance. Our policy was a 80% reimbursement. The staff was amazing. Guided me through necessary documentation and required form. We received emails on processing the claim and completion. The checks were mailed within 10-14 days. Very refreshing dealing with a company that does what it claims and in a very short time. This was a first time claim and could not have gone any better. I would recommend this pet insurance to all folks looking for pet insurance coverage.

HealthyPaws makes it so easy to submit and process claims. I had my dog insured by another company prior to HealthyPaws and that company was not fun to deal with. They made the process so difficult to submit or file claims that I became discouraged and just stopped doing it. All of the headache and roadblocks they would throw at me to get a claim paid for or even to just file one would be just be a giant pain to go through. I would like to add that HealthyPaws was very quick with their responses to the claim I recently submitted for my dog. It was a pleasure to do business with them. Mike

Healthy Paws is the best Pet Insurance on the market today. The coverage is excellent, the staff are responsive to questions and the turn around time for claims is remarkably quick. I unqualifiedly recommend Healthy Paws to anyone who is looking for Pet Insurance. No one wants to be a position of not being able to not provide live saving or pain management care for their pet. Healthy Paws gives you the assurance that you will not be in that position. Maureen, Cody and Jackson

I have had Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for over a year for my now two year old fur-baby. She is truly the apple of my eye. Unfortunately she was recently treated for anemia due to bone marrow failure because of over vaccinations. While struggling with taking time off of work to get blood transfusions, animal ER visits and tests and more animal ER visits and more tests. This was mentally, emotionally and physically draining. Knowing that she had health insurance gave me the peace of mind knowing that I can and will do everything in my power to save her life. I am happy to report that she is on the road to recovery. Without insurance I would have paid a total of $5,111.80 and still counting.... Read More

My 17 week old puppy had a cough & constant itching. After many trips to the vet, anesthesia, x-rays, radiology consults Healthy Paws paid nothing. There appears to be no explanation. My other bills they consider well visits & are not covered. If you're your paying over $1500. in pet medical & nothing is covered what's the point of the insurance?

Official Response

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Ellieri - We make every effort to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee (veterinary exam fee). Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. All claim decisions are based off of your pet’s medical records and the signs/symptoms that are noted by your veterinarian. We use a pet's medical records and notes written by the attending veterinarian to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions which would keep us from approving a claim. Since your pet had the issues you mentioned prior to enrollment, they were not eligible for coverage. As you stated in your review, your other visit was for preventative care (vaccines, heartworm/flea and tick prevention, etc.), which is excluded from coverage. We hope your and your pet stay well.
