Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

So pleased with the customer service and quality of coverage. The app is AWESOME and it's so easy to submit and track a claim, I rave about it to others every time we have to use it. They even followed up to find out if our dog was doing better after a serious incident, which she was thankfully. I had though called in tears but was reassured in a caring way of how my coverage would work. The plan doesn't, for instance, cover routine maintenance or office visits. This protection did cover critical tests to determine what was wrong and emergency care. That protection allowed us to focus on caring for our pet, not figuring out how to pay for it. Our plan with Healthy Paws has been one... Read More

Healthy Paws has been truly amazing to work with on a regular basis, but even more so in a time of need. Recently, our dog spent 1.5 weeks in ICU at a local vet hospital after suffering a stroke. Healthy Paws processed and approved the claim that resulted from the bill for that visit, as well as sent the check to us incredibly fast. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for pet insurance!

We have never had pet insurance before, but on the advice from our vet after adopting Lola the Labradoodle who swallows things she shouldn't--We decided to look into it. After a bit of research, we settled on Healthy Paws and got Lola enrolled. Lola has eaten many things in her two years of life, and has been lucky--until a rock went down and got stuck in her small intestine. Looking at the xray with the vet, we were told we could wait to see if the rock passed (risk of losing part of her small intestine, or rupture/infection) OR he could do the surgery right then and remove the rock. Knowing we had pet insurance for Lola made this such an easy decision! "Scrub up doc!" Lola's bill came to... Read More

I insure all three of my dogs with Healthy Paws and it does get costly. However, whenever I consider dropping my insurance one of my dogs will have something happen that will remind me that my Healthy Paws coverage is essential! Each time I have submitted a claim it has been processed promptly and I have never had to fight for compensation....each time has been smooth sailing! Recently my older dog needed significant leg surgery and once again my claim check was to me quickly....which really was a blessing as surgery gets expensive! I did my research and am very happy with my choice of Healthy Paws!

Recently our 9-year old dog, Joy, was diagnosed with a mass on her spleen and pancreatitis. As an owner who loves her pet very much, this was an extremely emotional and stressful time for my family and I...not knowing if she may have cancer. The removal of the mass and her spleen showed no cancer. Having Healthy Paws as our insurance company was a tremendous blessing to us. Not having to worry financially was a great stress-relief. They also checked in with me often to see how Joy's recovery was going and I felt very encouraged knowing how much they cared for little Joy. We had been with PetsBest insurance before I found Healthy Paws. We were paying much more for insurance there and as... Read More

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance is an excellent choice to have for your pets. We recently had to have an emergency operation on our long haired Dacshund. When I filed the insurance papers out at the Hospital, and then the hospital sent them to Healthy Paws, we immediately heard from Healthy Paws that they would take care of paying the pet hospital and it was for the full amount that Healthy Paws paid less $100 dollars deductible. Healthy Paws also sent a letter to see how our dog was, such concern from a insurance company is unbelievable! As a result of my praise to my family, my Daughter and Grandson have enrolled their pets also.

My dumb golden retriever ate one too many socks and needed it to be surgically removed. $4000 and 25 staples later, he is doing much better! Thank goodness we had Healthy Paws Insurance. Surgery was on a Tuesday, I submitted my claim on Friday through the Healthy Paws App (get it... it is so easy and helpful). One week later, I received my check in the mail. Such an easy process and super fast! If only human health insurance was this easy!

Our dog needed emergency surgery. On Wednesday we filed a claim and two days later, we received an email noting the approval of our claim. Today I received a check. I could not believe how prompt, efficient, and helpful Healthy Paws was! Not only that, they followed up the email with a wonderful note asking how our dog was doing. We are so fortunate that we could have our dog treated, with the confidence that Healthy Paws had us covered. Not having to mix our dog's medical needs with financial decisions helped us immensely. Thank you! I strongly recommend Healthy Paws!

I've never bragged about any insurance company until now. I tell all my pet parent friends that they can't afford not to have pet insurance. Excellent customer service & quick processing for claims. I have 2 dogs that each have coverage. One of my dogs just had her second ACL surgery. Without this coverage, I may have had to make the painful choice of having her put down due to the cost. Nobody wants to be in that position. I work for a major health care system and I know my dogs have better coverage and service than I do! If your on the fence about pet insurance, make the leap and sign up with Healthy Paws. I've had other pet insurance companies prior to Healthy Paws and I've fired... Read More

After losing my cats of 22 and 23 to kidney/heart disease, a little kitten Sophia conned her way into my home with a personality I couldn't resist. A friend recommended Healthy Paws, and even though Sophia was just a kitten.. I went ahead and signed up even though I thought "What could really go wrong?" ..Well, she ate 3 hair elastics, and later developed breathing/other issues(..Two separate incidents). Without Healthy Paws, I don't know where I would be. We still don't know what's wrong with Sophia, but I can take her to the vet and specialists and have them run tests without worrying about the huge expenses. Yes, I still have to pay the vet exam fees (which can be steep! So take that... Read More
