Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws is excellent to work with. There is no comparison to the last pet insurance coverage we had. HP is great about communicating and pays quickly. Never a problem at all.

My dogs have been covered by Healthy Paws for 5 years. My dog Enzo recently underwent emergency back surgery for a spinal cord compression injury. Having your beloved pet injured is devastating and most people are not prepared for a bill in excess of $6500. I had the comfort of knowing that Healthy Paws would provide exceptional coverage and there would be no hoops to jump thru. The reimbursement process is amazingly easy and the claim was processed within days. If Enzo should need Physical Therapy, those services will be covered too, not something often covered by Pet Insurance. Thank you Healthy Paws for all you do for our pets!!

I have had Healthy Paws insurance for my 3 dogs since 2012. The unfortunate 3 times I have had to use them in the last year were great. Healthy Paws is quick to respond to claims, issues check reimbursements just about immediately and follows up on the health of the pet. I highly recommend them!

I have had the insurance for about 2 years and never hit the deductible. Even so, I was just advised of a nearly 12% increase in my monthly premium. Time to find another insurance company.

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Thomas - Due to the increasing cost of new technology and advances in veterinary care, rates will increase each year. These annual increases provide you the opportunity to offer your pet the best medical and diagnostic options available today. Rest assured, we will never penalize you with higher rates for making claims. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates periodically to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care. Even though we could not keep your increase as low as we would have liked, our competitors premiums are anywhere from 9% to 18% higher overall than your premium with Healthy Paws (based on your current reimbursement level/deductible). Our management team works hard to keep your premiums as low as possible, but there continues to be an overall increase in the frequency of high-value treatments such as anterior cruciate ligament surgeries, cancer treatments including chemotherapy, and foreign body exploratory surgeries performed by veterinarians.

healthy paws pet insurance has repeatedly saved the lives of my two dogs by allowing me peace of mind to go to the best vets and surgeons in my area with no worry about cost. as far as i know they are the ONLY pet insurance without price caps/limits on treatments which means if you your pup needs $15,000+ worth of surgery then it's covered after your deductible. i never knew vet bills could be so high and like many of us never thought it'd happen to me. but it has. repeatedly. with healthy paws i never have to worry if i've got enough in savings again. i will NEVER adopt another pup without insuring them with this incredible company immediately.

We had to bring our dog Fitzgerald for emergency surgery in March and pay everything up front at the ER. Once we received the final bill we submitted it through the app and within days we had our check. A week after surgery I received an email from Healthy Paws asking how Fitzgerald's was recovering. I HIGHLY recommend healthy paws

After adopting a pound puppy, I decided to purchase pet insurance for any medical issues that may arise. Phew, smart thing to do - I've had her less than 6 months and she need surgery for an intestinal blockage. I was able to get her the life saving medical attention she needed and didn't even have to think about the cost. Well, to be honest, I did think about the cost, and I wondered what purchasing insurance would get me. Thankfully, I didn't have to do more than think about it for that short time - I was asked to submit a health history and the invoice, and within a couple days I received an email telling me exactly how much they covered, stating the check was on it's way to me AND also... Purchasing a Healthy Paws pet insurance policy a year ago was the best decision we made when taking in the responsibility of caring for our puppy who is a french bulldog. We had an incident and our dog tore his ACL and Meniscus shortly after he turned two. As you can imagine this we were very nervous and the medical bills were very expensive. Healthy paws reviewed our claim reciepts that we uploaded seamlessly via the app while at the surgery center. 48 hours later the claims were accepted and reimbursement checks were in the mail 10 business days later. Everyone I spoke to at healthy paws was very kind and accomodating during the whole process. They even checked in with us after the fact... Read More

Our 1 year old mix breed rescue began to develop a small lump on the right side of her neck. We were so thankful that we had her insured with Healthy Paws since we adopted her at 4 months old. Her medical bills in total were $1,500 and we were able to recoup 90%! The turnaround time for submitting the claim and receiving the check is often about a week and the process could not be easier. Simply snap a photo of the bill, upload it through the app and hit submit. The plan is very affordable and extremely clear about what is covered and what isn't. They even sent a follow email to see how Penny was recovering :) This company truly understands the relationship between people and their pets.... Read More

I am an owner of a young yellow Lab and signed up with Healthy Paws after doing an online comparison of various pet insurers. Healthy Paws stuck out because of their reasonable rates, easy claims procedure, and overall coverage. Unfortunately, our dog required knee surgery, but fortunately with our plan, we were reimbursed 80% of the cost. Processing the claim was simple and the check came in a very short time. I am very impressed with the way Healthy Paws treats their customers and would highly recommend this company to any pet owner.
