Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

This pet insurance had great reviews and that is why I purchased it. Once I filed a claim on my smallest dog I was told by a customer service agent that they don't determine payment on the diagnosis of the treating veterinarian. The claim was refused based upon the fact that the dog had been seen by the vet previously during the waiting period where it was determined by the vet that there was nothing physically wrong with her. When she started exhibiting symptoms at at later date, we took her back to the vet. They ran x-rays and gave her some muscle relaxants/pain. This claim was turned down because Healthy Paws did not take into account that during the first visit nothing was found... Read More

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Charlene - We’re never happy when we have to deny a claim for a client. We use a pet's medical records and notes written by the attending veterinarian to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions which would keep us from approving a claim. Unfortunately, we could not cover your pet’s illness since the signs/symptoms of your pet’s current condition were first noted by your veterinarian in a visit during your policy’s fifteen day waiting period. The majority of pet insurance companies have some sort of waiting period before coverage actually begins. Healthy Paws is very transparent about our waiting period on our website, in the policy documents that are in each client’s online account and during the enrollment process. We hope you and your pets stay well.

We've had healthy paws pet insurance for 3 years on our Miniature Schnauzer and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. We've been fortunate enough not to have needed to make any claims until only recently when our mini schnauzer, August, randomly and unexpectedly had 3 seizures within 12 hours. As one can expect, we were very worried and thought the worst. We took him to the emergency vet to see a neurologist and it was recommended that blood work, X-rays, and an MRI be done to determine and/or narrow the diagnosis. Thankfully we had pet insurance and submitted the claim after having to keep August overnight at the vet. After the many tests, the vet determined that August has epilepsy and that his... Read More

Based on my experience with Healthy Paws I have to say it is in fact the best insurance you can ever find. After calling other companies I ended up with the #1 rated because Healthy Paws is the only pet insurance company that offers unlimited lifetime benefits with an annual deductible. They covered the cancer treatment for Blacky a German shepherd and that was the moment of truth. They sent me a check for over $6,000 and recently a Hernia Surgery for my Ruby a dachshund mix. The mobile app is the best and fast way to do claims without forms. They pay based on your actual veterinary bill and basically lifetime limits for clains. Very affordable. I strongly recommend them I am 100% sure... Read More

Healthy Paws has been a blessing for our family. Our 3 year old Chiwini just went through extensive disc surgery and he is having physical therapy as part of his recovery process. Thank God for such a reliable company reimbursing us. Not only are they supporting our plight financially but they really have expressed concern for Oscar's well-being. I would recommend them to any pet owner, and I certainly will do that. Thanks again for your kindness. It is times like this when one needs such support and no hassles.

We just filed a claim for a surgery for our 5 years old Samoyed who ate a toy two weeks ago, the surgery went well but the cost was close to $2500. The claim process submitted online was fast and easy, I received confirmation that reimbursement check is on the way within 3 days since the claim was entered in their system. I'd definitely recommend HeathyPaws insurance to anyone have pets.

I was so relieved knowing we had Healthy Paws to take care of us financial in this stressful time . I received excellent coverage and even an email asking how my pup was recovering. Don't get caught without insurance. Healthy Paws allows me to get the best medical care for my dog without the worry of the all mighty dollar .... Read More

While many companies couldn't care less about customer service I can honestly say that isn't the case with Healthy Paws. I recently had a situation where our 1 yr old pup needed surgery that was going to cost $3,000. The Healthy Paws rep told me what I needed to do in order to submit the claim and eliminate any delays. I followed those instructions and within 2 weeks I had a check. It is such a pleasure to do business with people who stand behind their product and service...wouldn't it be nice if everyone did business this way? FYI - I moved two of our dogs to Healthy Paws because of a dispute with another insurance company. I would have moved all of them but two have pre-existing... Read More

5 stars does not even come close to adequately rating how fabulous this company is. My Frenchy is 3 years old and I remember when we first got him our vet told us what a fantastic pup he was but he did state that this breed can have issues and we should consider pet insurance. So I started my research and found HealthyPaws had great reviews, rates and the site was so easy to use. My first experience having to use our policy was on the night before Thanksgiving when my sweet Gus went into respiratory distress and we had to rush him to the emergency vet. That experience was so difficult, but what made it easier was the fact that I submitted my claim and was processed and reimbursed... Read More

I wasn't sure if we needed or wanted pet insurance since my dogs always had healthy annual check-ups. As my dogs got older we decided we didn't want to take the risk of a possible costly age related illness. We began researching pet insurance companies. After much research we decided on Healthy Paws insurance due to their stellar reviews and how their benefits compared to other companies. I was almost certain we would not end up using the insurance, but one day, out of the blue, one our dogs went almost completely blind. It was a heart-breaking moment. We visited our vet and were referred to a neurologist. The neurologist needed to do various tests including an MRI to rule out brain... Read More
