Overall Rating: 4.9 / 5 (Excellent)

Pets Best provides pet owners with a lot of latitude in selecting the right coverage for their pet and the best plan for their budgets. Its plans are quite comprehensive and comparatively low-cost.

The company offers two benefit limit choices: $5000 or unlimited. We prefer plans that offer the option of unlimited coverage, particularly when adding it doesn't drive costs sky-high. That's the case with Pets Best.

Pets Best has no age restriction; they will cover dogs and cats regardless of how old they are. The company does not exclude cruciate ligament issues so long as they occur after a 6-month waiting period. That's a significant competitive advantage for owners of dogs susceptible to that type of illness. In addition, plans include coverage for accidental dental and some dental illnesses.

Combined with the company's relatively low premiums, that make Pets Best a solid choice for pet parents seeking comprehensive, affordable protection.

Pets Best Coverage

Coverage - 5 / 5

Pets Best offers three levels of coverage. The Essentials plan reimburses you for the wide range of veterinary services offered by most pet insurance plans, but excludes exam fees for accidents and illnesses and rehabilitative, acupuncture, and chiropractic care. The company's Plus plan adds exam fees to the list of covered services and its Elite plan includes rehabilitative, acupuncture, and chiropractic care.

Pets Best also offers two tiers of wellness plans that can be added to any policy for an additional fee.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 5 / 5

Pets Best offers two benefit cap options: $5,000 or unlimited. We like to see plans that offer, even at a minimum, significant coverage. One serious accident or illness could result in veterinary bills way in excess of the low benefit limits some other companies offer. $5000 seems a reasonable and cautious amount of insurance to carry if you want to be fully prepared to give your pet all the veterinary care he or she needs.

$5,000 or Unlimited

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 5 / 5

Pets Best allows you to choose a reimbursement level of 70%, 80%, or 90%. Combined with the opportunity to customize a deductible, that flexibility can make pet insurance more affordable for a wider range of customers.

Maximum Percent Reimbursement

Deductibles - 5 / 5

Pet's Best allows you the flexibility to set your deductible in increments between $50 and $1,000. That's a broader range of options than many plans provide.

Pricing: How much does Pets Best cost?

Cost - 5 / 5

Pets Best pricing is quite flexible. The company allows you to choose deductibles ranging from $50 to $1000 and reimbursement levels of 70%, 80%, and 90%. There are however, only two choices of benefit limits: an annual cap of $5000 or unlimited benefits.

The company's two higher-priced plans include reimbursement for exam fees resulting from accidents or illnesses, a feature that's not often found in other plans and can wind up saving customers quite a bit in out-of-pocket costs. Overall, Pets Best provide excellent coverage for the money.

I had received my policy but still did not know how to file vet's bills. Shelley was extremely helpful, as have all the other people at Pet's Best I've spoken to. Sometimes, I get the same person I spoke to before and they recognize me and ask me about our little guy! NO hold times every time I've called in. You get to speak to real people.

Let me begin by saying...DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! While insurance can be an awesome thing for serious illness or accident in the long run you end up paying FAR more than you would to pay for the illness or accident when it happens. Over the years I have paid this company THOUSANDS. My claim settlements...mere hundreds. Recently I took my dog in to have her teeth cleaned. I do this every few years to prevent periodontal disease. She is not a chewer so she needs this done. I took her in a month ago. When I picked her up the vet said he had to pull the two front teeth on her lower jaw. They were NOT diseased...they were loose so he removed them. These tiny teeth don't account for... Read More

Hi Maureen, thank you for taking the time to share your experience with Pets Best. Dental disease is a direct exclusion of all of our policies. The claim was denied due to periodontal disease as indicated in Apple Valley Veterinarian's medical records. We are sorry to see you have cancelled your policy, if you reconsider insuring with our company, please know we do offer annual plans as opposed to per incident. We wish the best for you and Skylar.

I chose Pets Best because they offer an accident only policy. Our dog is a chewer so we needed coverage in case of accidental ingestion. It also provides coverage for broken limbs and injuries due to being hit by an automobile.

I had insurance for my dog for 10 years with PetsBest, but they raised the premium when he turned 10. He had been a healthy dog that had all exams and vaccinations on schedule, but they raised our premium when he was 8 yrs old from $25 to $42/month, and again at 10 yrs to $60/mo. Considering their policy paid only 80% of expenses, and only $2500 maximum per illness, we switched to Trupanion. While we paid a higher deductible, it was worth it because premiums were lower and they pay 90% expenses with unlimited coverage per illness. They paid most of our bill for liver cancer surgery and treatment which added up to close to $4000.

Hi Claire, we valued the 6 years we insured you and Bailey with the Pets Best family. We reviewed your plan and would like to go over options with you to lower your premium. We understand your concern for a more affordable premium. Keep in mind we have several different plan options to fit your needs including our unlimited coverage plans. Please call us if you would like to go over these options. You're correct that your rates can go up each year when your policy renews. In order for us to determine the adequate premium we need to maintain our services, we analyze claims data related to pet age, breed, geographic location, and factor in general inflation. We're here to help you in any way we can. 1-877-PetsBest (877-738-7237) Mon-Fri 7AM - &PM. SAT 10AM - 2PM Mountain Time.

I was so happy with Pets Best, which is who my vet recommended & having been with them for 4 years, I introduced my 2 sisters and a neighbor to this organization. I have 2 dogs enrolled, with extremely minimal, routine claims, nothing life threatening, my premium $141., tho higher than other insurance companies, remained the same. Last month, one of my dogs ingested a high dosage of medication, I had to have him hospitalized for 3 days, my claim was for $1600.00 not excessive in this day of medicine. Within week, I received a letter that my premium would be going up 78% to $248.56!!! Tho the letter stated it was NOT due to my claim, it was routine due to my dogs age, increased medical... Hi Char, yes, prices will tend to go up as your pet ages. Much like in human health care, an older person is going to be more expensive to insure than a younger one. Similarly, a pet's chances of becoming ill will increase as they age. The insurance premiums are designed to reflect this increased risk of illness. You'll be happy to know that prices DO NOT go up because of your pet's personal claims filing activity. Let us know if you would like to go over options on reducing your premium.

Should be zero stars. I informed them that I would not renew in 2024 due to large rate increase. My account was on auto-pay, always paid and up to date. When they received my notice of non renewal, they withdrew $1,527.06 from my checking account for no reason. Now I cannot get them to return my money. Horrible experience. Pets Best should be your very last choice for pet insurance. Horrible.

Best advice is to stay away from Pets Best. If you sign up for auto-pay, their accountants will clean out your bank account. It happened to me December 2023. I am still trying to get my money back. Over $1,500 taken. Reported to State Attorney General and filed a complaint through my bank. There are a lot of choices for pet insurance, stay away from this one.

My dog went in on the weekend for a sever ear infection. The vet bill with medicines was over $300. I filed with Pet's best on September 30 2023. All I've gotten is the total run around. They asked for records from the e-vet. I had already sent them, so I sent them again. Next they asked for her entire vet history from the regular vet. I sent them. Then they asked for them again. Nothing but run around on the phone from someone reading off a checklist as well. Don't waste your money. Insurance for people is less of a headache.

I recently learned that Pets Best Pet Insurance had LIED on their website and I'd like to let other customers know abount my experience. I called WhisperDocs the 24/7 veterinary help line for assistance (8/24/23) with my 4 y/o Cocker Spaniel. I asked to speak with a vet since the website stated that "a veterinarian is always available," only to be told that veterinarians do not answer or speak to customers on the 1-800 phone line. The person I spoke to referred to herself as a veterinary "nurse." I have heard of vet tech programs but I am not familiar with a nursing program for veterinary care. The vet nurse could not answer my question and would not let me speak with a vet. I contacted... Read More

HORRIBLE customer service! Unhelpful and rude agents do not assist with issues immediately and no clear answer when they are able to address and resolve issues with my account and 2 claims. I requested to speak to a person who has the authority to resolve my issue and was told 'our conversation is going in circles and I will not escalate this further'. SERIOUSLY? If someone from Pets Best reads these messages then please forward me the CEO Greg McDonald's email or I'll be happy to switch to Trupanion where they are pleasant and helpful!
