Overall Rating: 4.2 / 5 (Excellent)

Pets Best provides pet owners with a lot of latitude in selecting the right coverage for their pet and the best plan for their budgets. Its plans are quite comprehensive and comparatively low-cost.

The company offers two benefit limit choices: $5000 or unlimited. We prefer plans that offer the option of unlimited coverage, particularly when adding it doesn't drive costs sky-high. That's the case with Pets Best.

Pets Best has no age restriction; they will cover dogs and cats regardless of how old they are. The company does not exclude cruciate ligament issues so long as they occur after a 6-month waiting period. That's a significant competitive advantage for owners of dogs susceptible to that type of illness. In addition, plans include coverage for accidental dental and some dental illnesses.

Combined with the company's relatively low premiums, that make Pets Best a solid choice for pet parents seeking comprehensive, affordable protection.

Pets Best Coverage

Coverage - 4.3 / 5

Pets Best offers three levels of coverage. The Essentials plan reimburses you for the wide range of veterinary services offered by most pet insurance plans, but excludes exam fees for accidents and illnesses and rehabilitative, acupuncture, and chiropractic care. The company's Plus plan adds exam fees to the list of covered services and its Elite plan includes rehabilitative, acupuncture, and chiropractic care.

Pets Best also offers two tiers of wellness plans that can be added to any policy for an additional fee.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4 / 5

Pets Best offers two benefit cap options: $5,000 or unlimited. We like to see plans that offer, even at a minimum, significant coverage. One serious accident or illness could result in veterinary bills way in excess of the low benefit limits some other companies offer. $5000 seems a reasonable and cautious amount of insurance to carry if you want to be fully prepared to give your pet all the veterinary care he or she needs.

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 5 / 5

Pets Best allows you to choose a reimbursement level of 70%, 80%, or 90%. Combined with the opportunity to customize a deductible, that flexibility can make pet insurance more affordable for a wider range of customers.

Maximum Percent Reimbursement

Deductibles - 5 / 5

Pet's Best allows you the flexibility to set your deductible in increments between $50 and $1,000. That's a broader range of options than many plans provide.

Pricing: How much does Pets Best cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Pets Best pricing is quite flexible. The company allows you to choose deductibles ranging from $50 to $1000 and reimbursement levels of 70%, 80%, and 90%. There are however, only two choices of benefit limits: an annual cap of $5000 or unlimited benefits.

The company's two higher-priced plans include reimbursement for exam fees resulting from accidents or illnesses, a feature that's not often found in other plans and can wind up saving customers quite a bit in out-of-pocket costs. Overall, Pets Best provide excellent coverage for the money.

Yeah, I was told by a women at Pets Best that they would not cover a cruciate injury for 6 months. This is an injury caused by a accident. I am a orthopedic nurse that works on a orthopedic floor. This should be under the accident clause. Its very obvious that people don't now what they are talking about. It is another way to rip off the public so they wont have to pay. My rating minus 0

I had Healthy Paws for about 3 years and decided to make a change at a friends advice because "Pets Best" was cheaper and appeared to have the same coverage except they pay for office visits which seemed like a real PLUS. I added a second dog a 2 year old rescue to the plan - I submitted a claim for an ear infection - took 3 emails and medical records and they denied the claim as a "pre-existing" condition - DOGS GET EAR INFECTIONS just like people. First chance I got I went back to Healthy Paws,

Hi Jeannie, ear infections are covered as long as they are not chronic or ongoing prior to the policy. Claims are processed by reviewing your pet's medical records from your vet. If you disagree with the decision reached with these records, you are welcome to file an appeal with supporting documents.

Absolute trash company. Had a dog that ended up with an aural hamartoma. They denied it because they said it was linked to a previous ear infection months before. Even though he had an exam the day after I purchased the insurance, and a note from the veterinarian saying he didn't have an ear infection the day I purchased the insurance. They're looking for a way to deny claims, company is trash.

We are sorry to hear you are dissatisfied. Claims are processed for new issues, unrelated to conditions that originated prior to coverage. If you disagree with the claim decision reached with your vet records, you are welcome to file an appeal with supporting documents.

While I was in the process of meeting my deductible they were average in processing claims and being reasonable. But the moment my deductible was met they were impossible. They were asking for information that didn't exist and even when I and both vets were prompt with getting them the information they wanted, they closed the claim and I had to email and call three times to get them to reopen it. Then they denied the claim even though they had approved the exact same issue when I was still meeting my deductible and there was no imminent payout. Here is what unfolded.... Do not use Pet's BEst, huge waste of money and they continue to hike up the price 15-20% every year without notifying you. Their excuse is that the pet got a year older. Huge criminals

We have had Pets Best since 2013. Just recently we took our dog to the vet, because she was not feeling well. They did blood test, urine Analysis test. They found crystals in her. We had to go back and have and Ultrasound done on another visit. Pets Best really came through helping us pay for all of these test, after our deductible was met! Would highly recommend them.

Before you pay for any insurance policy, you may want to consider putting the premium and yearly deductible in a personal savings account for your pet to use when needed. Another important consideration is to find a pet insurance company that has no waiting period (or the shortest one you can find). PetsBest takes your premium and makes you wait 14 days for any illness and 3 days for accident. Unfortunately our 6 month old came down hurt/ill on the 8th day of purchasing the policy. Diagnosis was toxins which one may think was an accident as both the family vet a ER ruled out congenital problems with the liver and focused on household poisons. I had no problem with PetsBest denying... Read More

Hello Andrea, we have some of the shortest waiting periods in the industry for injury, illness, and wellness. Waiting periods are set because pre-existing issues are not covered expenses. A diagnosis of a toxin is covered by our accident policies as long as there is a confirmed substance that caused the toxicity. However, medical records indicated the vet was not sure what was causing the symptoms. You have the option to file an appeal with supplemental records from your veterinarian to indicate this was in fact an accident as it occurred on day 4 of your policy inception date, which is after the accident waiting period ended but not before your illness waiting period ended. Unfortunately the pet insurance industry is not able to cover any testing or treatment of pre-existing conditions. To clarify, future injury or illness that is unrelated to this incident would still qualify for coverage as long as the records indicated there is no relation to a pre-existing issue. We will determine this by requesting records from your veterinarian directly as we did with this claim. We see you have cancelled your policy and are sorry to see you go. We wish you and Tiffany De Chocolat the best!

One year into this plan, very first claim filed, to find out that the medicated bath (part of the necessary treatment for my dog's skin condition) performed at the vet's office is not covered, because it's under "grooming". I am rather disappointed with this policy, and now I'm not even sure if I want to continue with this insurance or not.

I had Petsbest for 10 yrs. The monthly cost became prohibitive going from $156 per month to over $200 in one month. I had to constantly argue with them over their interpretation of vet bills and whether the doctor visits were follow ups or new conditions or continuing, whether they ere necessary. I had to raise my deductible to be able to pay the monthly bill and then argue regarding what their share of cost was. I cancelled them the month before my Toby passed away. If he had lived in still wouldn't have been able to afford them or be willing to deal with them

Hi Kathleen, we value you as a member of Pets Best since 2009. You're correct that your rates can go up each year when your policy renews. In order for us to determine the adequate premium we need to maintain our services, we analyze claims data related to pet age, breed, geographic location, and factor in general inflation. Rates do not increase due to claim history. We are showing all of your claims filed for Toby were reimbursed per your policy limits. The only claim that was closed out was the claim submitted after you had cancelled Toby's coverage. We wish you and Toby the best!

I bought this insurance for my cats. Unfortunately, one of them needed emergency help. No one answered after one month. If I hadn't asked about the status, I wouldn't know that I had to inquire additional documents from the clinic in another country where I usually brought my cats for a check-up. We will see in future what decision the insurance company will make. Reading the reviews and looking at my experience with this insurance company, I understand that it provides very poor service. They take money easily but don't want to do their job properly. UPD: After 40+ days, my application was reviewed, so I take my words back. Insurance company works honestly, but very slowly
