Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

We have had nothing but excellent service from AHS and we have been a customer since we purchased our home 10 years ago. It seems that every year, something major needs to be repaired, and we couldn't do it without AHS. The have always sent clean, dependable, repairmen to our house, that I am not afraid to be left alone with. I love this company and am constantly pestering my friends to purchase an AHS policy. I feel like everyone should have one!

American Home Shield has provided me with dependable contractors. They have been timely, communicated well and fixed my issues. The online scheduling system has worked very well.

AHS did not provide timely (as stipulated in my contract) service. They did not provide adequate options when I spoke to them on the phone (again, as stipulated in my contract). It took a lot of high level complaining to finally get an apology for this failure. When the contractor finally showed up, they did a good job - it was a simple fix - at least they got that part right. I was not happy with the run-around or their excuses.

Don't waste your money with this home warranty. I attempted to leave a bad review on their website but they will only allow you to show good reviews. It took 8 month and around 10 visit from accord appliance repair before i was allowed to switch to sears. Sear fix it one visit. I had to buy a refrigerator while I was waiting for them to fix it.

Calling into AHS to speak with someone is frustrating. The hold time is always long. I have held the line for more than 1 hour.

Previous service requests with AHS went well. But in November I scheduled a service call on our refrigerator, that was intermittently powering on and off. The first technician that arrived didn't fix the issue, and damaged other parts. This caused things in my fridge to freeze and my ice maker and water dispenser no longer worked. Every call to request service on this issue resulted in around an hour of holding, and it would take several days before a technician would arrive. Weeks would go by without any contact, and I would have to call. Every time I called seemed to coincide with the parts just arriving. Several service calls were no call/no shows. An appointment was... Read More

I was actually disappointed in my experience so far with American mobile. Your company came highly Recommended and we had an issue with our sump pump. We live outside of the country and rent our home. I set up appointment, plumber came out, left me a message that he is going to request the the pump needs replacement. I never heard from anyone and reached out to American mobile. It was almost impossible to get a hold of anyone. Sat on hold for over an hour, was hung up on, no where to send email, so waited until live chat was available. Had long discussions and requested someone call me to discuss the situation. They called and said they would send another opinion out because plumber... Read More

They have no customer service or conscience. They can escalate your claim, however you will never have your system fixed well by one star companies that are not even trained or certified.

I called American Home Warranty because my pipes were backing up in my tun and because I have an old house with no clean out they wouldnt come and fix it. I had to call and see what was going on because the plumber they sent didnt even call me back to let me know just left me hanging. I would not recommend this company!!!!!!

The worker that responded to my heating problem was extremely knowledgeable, prompt and educated me on what I can do to avoid further problems regarding my heating system. I wish that all technicians for all other problems were at the same caliber.
