Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I wish I never got warranty with this company. I have been going through hell and back for almost a week now due to a leaking water heater. I was assigned a plumbing company through AHS and I don't usually get disappointed easily but their level of service was extremely subpar; They showed up for 30 seconds, looked at the heater, chuckled, and said yeah its busted you need a new one. My work order included looking at a leaky shower which I paid a $75 trade service fee for, and i had them go in the bathroom to take a look-- Plumbers response was "I will see what I can do when I come back to repair the heater". Not sure why the shower wasn't taken care of then and there since i had paid the... Read More

While trying to use this home warranty for the first time, my household has been without hot water or heat for 4 days and still no fix in sight. Called on Friday with an emergency repair, and it's now Tuesday evening and my work order is still getting passed around. Buyer beware, you are throwing away your money if you purchase a home warranty from this company.

Don't trust some reviewers' positive comments on this horrible company, and I believe a lot of comments here are faked by AHS. Please read those real and negative comments, which account for more than 50% in all comments here. I had a terrible experience with AHS in the past a few weeks. I already terminated my contract.

First and WORST experience ever. American Home Shield sent out a plumbing contractor to my home to fix a heater for the third time and its not fixed. its the worse customer service and they deal with the unprofessional company. I Am going to cancel my contract with them and switch to a different company.

BUYER BEWARE! First and WORST experience ever. American Home Shield sent out a plumbing contractor to my home to fix a water leak, said contractor cut numerous LARGE holes (some of which go right through one side of the wall into the adjoining rooms!!) in my drywall (including the dining room ceiling) to locate the leak (not even remotely close to where any plumbing was) and didn’t locate the leak – he then discloses that he wasn’t in fact a plumber and that he ‘just merely comes out and tears the place up to try and find the leak and leaves the mess for the next contractor to fix’. I had to ask him to leave. I was disgusted. And disgusted at the mess he’d created in my home. Holes... Read More

Most notably, expect to spend a loooooong time waiting on hold to actually speak to somebody. Second, their online chat option doesn’t work because “our agents are not available at the moment” at all moments. Third, do not fill out a service request online if you have multiple of the same item to fix. I learned that the hard way when I had multiple leaking faucets and they would only fix 1, so I had to pay another service fee for them to come out and fix the rest. That means you have to call in your service request and wait 45 plus minutes to actually speak to someone. Though they are implementing a new system that will call you back instead of waiting, you still have to hold for some time... Read More

AHS would not pay to replace my insinkerator disposal with a like model; instead, they would only pay for smaller, inferior disposal of the same HP. The plumber informed me that it would be an additional $250 to install the same Insinkerator that I had. Additionally, the plumber (Marco) said that my whirlpool tub is too old to be fixed. AHS sent me a $185 check in lieu of repair. I contacted an outside contractor who has ordered the parts and will be fixing it upon their arrival. The plumber contractor that they are working with sent out a repairman (Marco) who was very nice but incompetent. He barely glanced at the tub before saying it was too old to be repaired; he then installed... Read More

Been waiting on a wash dryer repair as from January the 6th. Now it is March the 5th, still nothing done. when you call they let you wait on the phone for at least 30 to 45 minutes. Then you finally have some answering your call, you get stupid answers.
