Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Trying to make a claim is difficult. I was on hold for at least 20 minutes before I could speak to a representative. I had to call back multiple times concerning different issues. As a customer, I should not have to be on hold for that long to speak to a person to help me.

At first I was really unhappy with them. It was my first time to need a repair. The online request is very easy to do. I was pleased, but it was going to take a week or so to get a serviceman here for a refrigerator. That's a long time to wait. A long time to eat out or go to the store daily. Food was spoiled. Finally the guy arrives and he fixed it. The fix lasted about 6 hours, then it was dead again. I called the place he was from, but they said I had to go thru AHS. Trying to get hold of them was a nightmare. On the phone holding for an hour only to get hung up on and start again. I told them the problem and they said that they'd send a person out again, but it would be over 2 weeks!... Read More

This warranty service is absolutely terrible. They partner with the WORST contractors. I has an HVAC issue where the ac is hardly cool, the 5th time they sent a technician out (late every single time), he barely spoke english, disassembled the condensing unit and then said it was broken and couldn't put the unit back together. Next thing I know the home warrant is calling me saying I will have to pay $400+ in "modifications". I reach out to the HVAC compant to determine exactly what kind of modificiations are needed, they had no idea what I was talking about. This compant will use, abuse, and then drop you just to gain profits. STAY AWAY!!!

You guys hire Vendors who don't complete the Plumbinb job they were paid to do. The Plumber said he would put me in for urgent leaky plumbing repair and left with them still leaking in both bathrooms. He said he would get a Master Plumber and then The Greensboro based HOME SERVICES OF THE TRIAD at (336) 484-1482 would call back with who was coming to finish the job. Item to note is you paid them believed they completed the job and they did not. My two cents is you hired an out of town contractor that did not want to drive back to Chapel Hill to complete the job. Please get me a local plumber to fix the leaky pipes issues in both of my bathrooms and please get rid of that... Read More

I've used the home warranty several times since I've bought my home. Normal wear and tear, nothing crazy. Each request has been an ordeal. I've spent numerous hours on hold, trying to contact customer service. I've asked to speak to managers which took 24-48 hours to process the request. My first experience was a small plumbing leak that required me to shut off the water to my house. I have a small infant at home and an elderly parent I'm caring for mind you. I submitted the request online and never heard from the company. After a few hours I contacted the plumbing company who didn't know who I was and I eventually ended up calling AHS. After an hour on hold, an AHS... Read More

This is by far the worst company I've ever dealt with in regards to customer service. All my calls (four or more) to this company found me on hold from 30 to 45 minutes. Totally unacceptable!!! When the call was finally answered, I given the run-round or to be blunt - lies!!! In relations to air condition units, the warranty is joke. My unit needed servicing and uses R22 refrigerant costing $125.00 per pound. My unit required 8 pounds during repair. AHS pays $10.00 per pound toward the repair. (Seriously) Where did I benefit in having this warranty? I'm still searching for the answer!! BTW, this is the short version of my encounter with AHS. Definitely, TWO THUMBS DOWN!!!

Worst customer service I've every had with any company! This warranty came with the house when we bought it. My washer stopped working on Aug 24, I opened a work request early on Aug 25 and the repairman didn't show up until Aug 29th. The repairman said the part he needed could be bought locally but AHS had to ship the part, so it would be at least a week. On Sept 8th the repairman installed a new part but found out a different part was needed; the repairman said he again would have to wait on the part from AHS. I called AHS the afternoon of Sept 8th and explained the situation and that I had already spent $60 at the laundry mat. The AHS rep was very friendly and understanding, he... Read More
