Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I requested a service to fix the leaking problem with my water pressure regulator. AHS responded pretty quick and I got a call from the contractor. We agreed on a time and he showed up fixing the issue by replacing a new. Everything was great till after he left. It started leaking again with in an hour from the spot right next to it. I gave the contractor company a call and asked them to send the guy back. Two days later, they sent a different guy. After checking, he told me it was a different issue and I need to make a new request. This is where gets me mad because it is clearly the new regulator they put there is leaking and they were blaming on the issue with my pipe. I have to call... Read More

They sent out a appliance specialist right away and gave us the best price to replace our refrigerator. However, it was hard to get connected to the right person on the phone. We got bounced around from one help line to another before we finally found the right one.

The air-conditioning guy and the plumber showed up quickly and did what they promised. HOWEVER, the sheetrock repair needed because of the plumber having to cut open my ceiling never was repaired. I called and wrote repeatedly. Finally AHS admitted they have no sheetrock repair person in Griffin. They said they would send me a check for $150, even though this is a $300 job.( have contracted a local sheet rock repairman on my own.) A check in any amount has not arrived from AHS as yet, though the plumber was here on August 15. I am not cancelling my service yet, but I am not impressed.

NEVER USE AHS!! Once again, I have to pull up my contract & read to them the clause that shows I am covered! Every time I use AHS it is a fight to get them to cover what the contract says they should cover. I have multiple contracts and I have many properties. I have two other home warranty companies Choice Home Warranty and America's 1st Choice Home Warranty and I never have this problem with either of these companies. Also, when the tech that AHS finally shows up (which is never when it is originally scheduled) they always claim that the repair isn't covered and will require me to pay an exorbitant amount of money. Yet when I refuse and request they send a second tech from a different... Read More

I had trouble with my air condition unit in the hottest part of the summer. It was blowing but not cooling. I called American Home Shield and the representative was very courteous and helpful. I called around 4:00 in the afternoon and she had someone calling me about my problem by 5:30. The repair people were at my house before 9:00 the next day and in an hour I had cold air again. Could not ask for better service.

Been with the company for 14 years approximately and this time had to have the air conditioning coil replaced. I don’t know how the company contracts companies to repair but noticed that the person they initially contracted was a one person company and not reliable. I complained several times because was taking to long without air conditioning. Finally they contacted another company after 2 weeks. Then they came and took a while to get the part ordered. I had to be calling many times to have them move to the next step. It took a more than a month to fix the air conditioner. Then American Shield told me that I had to pay for the installation of the coil because the repair company said that... Read More

Only been with AHS for a month and I am very pleased with how professional and timely they are. Especially love how I received a text immediately after submitting a service order as well as being informed when the contractor is on their way or finish the job.

Customer service is horrible. The contractors that they send out are either just starting their businesses or really shoddy contractors from the experiences I have had. I have been overbilled and calling them to discuss it is pointless.

Problem was reported 3 months ago and never resolved. Three techs (?) were sent and neither knew what to do. One tech who supposedly replaced the tube leading to the ice maker did the job incorrectly causing water to flow onto the floor resulting in damage to my condo and to the condo below me. So, problem remains as well as over$1000 cost to me to repair the damage done by AHS techs!
