Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I have been a customer of AHS for over 20 years, servicing multiple properties. I have always been impressed with the professionalism and kindness shown by their staff. It is clear that they protect their customers above and beyond. Today I had the pleasure of speaking with Angela who once again is a shining star for AHS.

Placing a request for service is simple and efficient if you use their website. However, if a follow up call for the same appliance is needed, their website advises you to call them. That's when you will experience terrible wait times, and don't be surprised if you get cutoff after waiting over 30 minutes, and have to call back and start over. When you finally get through to a live person, they are competent and helpful. If you need the contractor to come back within 90 days for a problem related to the original issue, just call the contractor direct, and they may be able to schedule an appointment to get it OK'd by AHS.

Service requests via he online form is straightforward, however, speaking to an agent at AHS is a bit more challenging. Be prepared to wait if you want to speak to an agent.

This company just tries to shift blame and look for excuses to get out of paying for things. They would rather put a bandaid on the problem ten times in a row than fix it properly the first time. 90% of the contractors they've sent out are terrible but a few are ok. I'd switch warranty companies but they are all the same. Expect 1-2 hour hold times for every call and a frustrating experience each time you have a problem. AHS is awful and we will be getting rid of our warranty at the end of this year's contract. As I write this I have been without water for four days because they are trying to weasel out of paying for my covered repair. A former AHS countractor said they are taught... Read More

I think I reviewed here previously but I have been trying to get either a) Someone else come out and fix the toilet and faucets that I have been having problems with or to give me my service fee back to me. Now American Home Shield is ignoring me. They have sent me emails for me to call them, but when I do there is over an hour wait to talk to anyone. This company seems to be a scam and they care only about getting your money. I have learned a lesson but I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau about their slimy business practices. But I feel they do not care about making things right.

American Home Shield is next to useless. They are in business to make money and not spend any of it. In my prior home I had high end appliances. An expensive part on my Viking oven went bad. Rather than fixing it as agreed they had their representatives call me back repeatedly offering me a $500.00 buyout instead on a $5,000.00 + oven. They tried to convince me that I could take the buyout money and buy a new oven. I might have had better conversations talking to the wall. After firmly digging my heals in they consented to fixing it. Sometime later I had a major failure in my SubZero refrigerator. American Home Shield sent out a service man that knew nothing about SubZero's.... Read More
