Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

My refrigerator has been broke for 6 months!! I am on the 3rd service company. Between the 3 companies, all kinds of parts have been replaced and Freon added multiple times. I still have the same problem. They have tried to charge me the 100.00 service fee over and over and finally said that I didn't say the right thing when I opened a ticket. I was also told that I need to call, not go online for an ongoing problem. If you call, the wait time is 1 hour and sometimes the phone hangs up on you and you have to start that 1 hour all over. I have talked to 2 supervisors and have called the department for a replacement. My call was not well received. My contract states that if the item... Read More

We have been an AHS member for several years along with other family members and I have convinced co-workers to switch to AHS. We have always had excellent service with AHS except for the current service call on our central air conditioner. The initial call was placed, a technician came and said there is definitely something wrong that the rooms nearest the unit do not cool. So he tells us he is going to gather his things outside. So we are waiting for him to come back in and give us a ticket so we can pay him $75. So we wait, and wait, and wait so I go outside to see what's taking so long and HE IS GONE. We waited a week to hear back from him or AHS. WE HEAR NOTHING. We start... Read More

We have had problems with this company, they take your money and do not make the repairs. We canceled the plan and for 3 months they have continued to charge me debit card for monthly fees. I filed a complaint with the BBB but nothing has be resolved as of today 8/29/17. I had to cancel my debit card and I continue getting notices that they are trying to charge me again and my card is not going through now. I asked for the two months that they took out of my account after I canceled the plan and then I get a letter in the mail saying that they are not returning my money, they are saying that that money was for administration fees. Admin fees is not listed on my contract. They owe me... Read More

Hour wait time to speak with a representative. None of them are helpful. They do not follow through with what they tell you on the phone. They direct you to other departments who give you the same run around. It takes call after exhasting call, and nothing still gets resolves. Terrible terrible company and even worse customer service.

I am having a terrible time with American Homeshield warranty, I requested to fix my Stove more than a month and a half ago and still, it's not fixed. I had to call American Home shield several times to help me to fix this. I have been on hold every time more than half an hour. Now it's 55 minutes and I am still on hold. I have asked the customer service every time some one to call me and let me know what should be done and I have not received any responses yet.

For the most part American home shield has done a good job of taking care of my problems. This time it was a full week before the service got done. A week with out your firig. is too long. Next the problem came from the last service a few weeks before on the frig. ice maker when it was not put in right and it leaked into the fan and electric works making it shut down. The repair man said it was the last service repair and I did not owe the $75 fee. A few days later American home said I did owe and no matter what the service man said pay up. So this time I am not happy .

I have been as AHS member for 25 years with multiple houses. I had K & S plumbing come to repair toilets. He was professional and timely When I called to schedule service I specifically asked AHS if my plans included faucets. She said no. Therefore I didn't put that on work order. I had K & S look at my faucet while he was here. He said it was broke and would request replacement. When I called AHS about it she said she saw recommendation on work order but I needed to request ANOTHER work order to have him look at it and pay ANOTHER $75. Give me a break! Terrible customer service

We have had an absolutely awful experience with this company. We are preparing to file a complaint with the BBB, but I decided to start here first. Issue 1: Check Mailed to Wrong Person. Never Replaced We had an issue where the service provider insisted on collecting funds from us directly. We contacted American Home Shield Home Warranty and explained the situation. We dealt with a Ms. Vaughn and the entire correspondence chain is in writing. She advised that part of what we had paid for was not covered (which we were ok with) and part of it was. She asked if a check in a specific amount would resolve the issue for us. We agreed. Months later we had not received the check. After an... Read More
