Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

They claim to be the best home warranty company but actually they are the worst! To call customer service you need to wait minimum 2 hours! If you want to wait only one hour call after 12am! They use the worst possible contractors who need even written permission to breathe! For every job a contractor will come at least 2/3 times then only your work will be half done! Contractors say each and every step needs to be approved by AHS. I HAD TO SUFFER 98* FOR ENTIRE WEEK FOR THE CONTRACTOR TO TELL ME THAT HE NEEDS TO CLEAN COIL ON MY CENTRAL AC WHICH OTHER COMPANIES (HORIZON, C&C AND A.J.PERRI) told to replace. Even for my pool filter pump it took the contractor 10 days to fix a very small... Read More

I have needed to use my American Home Shield Home Warranty service two times this year. Both times the process for requesting service through the website was very user friendly and I recieved prompt notification of receipt of my request and follow-up emails & text messages with information for the vendor who would be providing service. The vendor followed through in a timely manner. They were professional and very knowlegeable. I appreciate knowing that American Home Shield has vetted and provides quality companies to fulfill the service needs of me, their customer.

This has been a constant battle. It should not be like this. I requested service and received a name of a provider, Eco Systems that would come out to fix our heater. First problem, they couldn't come out for 2 weeks. Other AHS providers came out within 2 days. When it was determined that the circuit board was bad Eco Systems said they needed to get approval from ASH to replace it. Second Problem, that took another 2 weeks. The Third and Fourth problem came from Eco Systems when they canceled the installation on the day of two times and it was a week to two weeks between dates. The customer service at Eco Systems is horrible. Absolutly horrible. I was asked to pay $1,875 for my share of... Read More

Called to report a problem with refrigerator. It took over 20 minutes on hold before call was answered. They sent a repair man out. Everytime we closed our fridge door the freezer door popped open. He puuled fridge out said we needed to clean the back out. Pushed it back in. Opened both doors and closed them. Then stated this happens all the time. I have been doing this for 30+ years. You just need a child latch to keep it closed. We asked about the seal, the fan, etc. said no just get a latch. We disagreed, and he said there is nothing he can do. We called another person out and paid for it ourselves. He adjusted a spring on bottom and it has been fine for 2 weeks. I called AHS and told... Read More

We just bought a new home and was recommended by the Real Estate agent to get this home warranty and heard great things from people about AHS. After moving in to our home we started having issues and requested work orders through the internet which seem simple enough; however, after service man showed up and looked at problem, he would no longer be seen. The company whom came out had to order a part and had been waiting on American Home Shield to give the OK. It has been over a month now and no response from American Home Shield. Good luck on calling them to check on service too because you will be on hold for 30 minutes on up! No lie.. This is absolutely worst then dealing with the IRS.

Over two weeks since I initially placed my call. We are on the coast, where it is delightfully cool in the summer months--that is when you can put on the heat during the drizzly, damp, foggy mornings and nights--daytime temps don't get over 60 degrees, lows in 50's. So heating unit went out, placed call. Technician did come out to service the unit; however, it's shot, no replacement parts, need to replace. We keep calling the service company, to no avail--forgot about us, then putting together estimates, then have calls into American Home Shield. I call every other day--nothing. We had to buy space heaters for every room as we have guests coming to stay over the next month--cost $450.00!... Read More

I wish I had read these reviews before I subscribed to AHS. This company does not answer their phone...they say wait is over 30 minutes....usually takes an hour. I came to AHS because I wanted a good company....what a huge mistake...time to switch.

My washing machine first gave us trouble September 2016 and we called American Home Shield and they setup for Coastal Appliance to come take a look. The repairman was not very confident that they could repair or get the parts but he did get the parts after about a two week wait and installed them on the machine. It seemed to work for a while but on May 2017 we started having the same problem so the same repairman came out and said the tension rods had went out again and ordered a new set and three weeks or so past with no washing machine before he got the parts and said it was fixed again. Around June 4th 2017 it broke again and Coastal sent out a new person that diagnosed a different... Read More

I would give this company a zero if I could. Do not buy this home warranty company. Lots of better ones. THis is my third home warranty company and by far the worst one.
