Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I cannot believe you post this company as being in the top ten! Every review I read was like I was rereading the same miserable service was given to everybody. I know as I also have had disgusting service from these people. The technician wrote up my kitchen stove as being in need of replacement as it was too old to repair. Ok so I wait and wait for some type of response from the company. Nothing! After many hours on the phone with people whom could hardly speak english (nightmare trying to converse ) I finally got them to understand that I had nothing to cook in. Days later I called again to be told that they had found a firm that specializes in out of date stove parts but it would take... Read More

I am a customer of AHS, but I won't be as soon as my contract expires. I have not had one service call where I paid the contractor on the spot that AHS recorded it as paid. I even had the contractor call AHS to tell them I paid their service fee and still had to call again twice because they can't keep track of their money. You have to wait on the phone for 30 minutes or more...if the system they use doesn't hang up on your 4 or 5 times while you are waiting...just to talk to someone. Now imagine doing this after every. single. service. call! Tonight I called and waited and waited just to have them tell me I'd have to call back tomorrow because I have to be on the phone with them at... Read More

I have been trying to and trying to get a hold of this company for work that was done in my home. I bought a home and soon after, a leak in my upstairs bathroom was found. Once I FINALLY reached them, I told them of that problem and a few others, they told me a company would come out on a certain date, they did not. They rescheduled and came and I paid them the $75.00 fee. The next day I called them back because I forgot to tell them about my shower leaking and to add it to the list of problems to be addressed and was informed that I would have to open a new work order and pay another $75 even tho no one had been to my home and no work had been started. RIDICULOUS! It took them 5-6 weeks... Read More

I was glad to have my AC unit finally repaired after two months with A USair. My problem started in May when my AC unit stopped cooling. It was on a Friday when I contacted American Home Shield, and they sent a serviceman out that Monday. He changed out the thermistat and thought that would fix the problem. It didn't. A couple of days later AC stopped cooling again. This time another serviceman with A USair came out. He said the thermistat was not the problem, but the fan motor was. He replaced the fan motor. That was fine for a few weeks, but AC stopped cooling again in mid June. Same guy came out again and said it was a faulty fan motor that was installed, and he put a new one in. This... Read More

Non reaponsive, unconcerned, and rude customer service from AHS. Keep sending repair company to repair a part the company has already told us and AHS is not available--backordered from manufacturer with no plans to recreate. Since the repair company has had to come out numerous times already, have requested appliance replacement. AHS says the THREE small of the 4 burners work, so it's technically not unusable. No concern that only the large NON WORKING burner has enough btu to boil water! At least 45 minute hold time to speak to live representative, and I've often tried several times of day. Very disappointing considering the cost of the warranty.

OMG...service is terrible. As I sit on hold, now approaching 5 hours total on hold over several phone calls, I'm wondering how this company stays in business. On 6/22/17 I called about a cooktop issue. Someone finally came on 7/6/17 and told me he didn't know what was the problem that he would have to contact the manufacturer...ok fine. So I never hear anything. The second time I called I had mentioned that Sub Zero would cover the parts because the cooktop was still under warranty for the parts but labor was not covered. That all they needed to do was order the parts, and Sub Zero would send them to me for the technician to repair. The rep at AHS said she didn't see where any parts... Read More

I have had this policy for the third year. I called about an undercounter ice maker repair. It took a week for the service repair man to come out. I paid the service fee if $75.00. They had to order a part which would take a week. They then called and told me the ice maker was not covered. Once the part came in, it still took a week to come out and make the repair. Way too long to have to wait. And especially no coverage. Second half: I called to see about obtaining coverage for multiple refrigerators and the ice maker. I was told I must wait until renewal, which was fine. I have since received a call saying my account was being closed. I called and was told that must have been a... Read More

fir air cinditioning support this service stinks. The first time I called I could reCh them ti mmake an appointment and service was in 2 days. Air 72 was sent and they replaced a burnt wire in a/c and unit ran. $100.00 charge. as soon as they left an email arrived to notify me freon would be extra cost (ok). Within 3 days the unit broke again. Tried calling for service at 7:00pm sever times, and on hold for 1 hour before giving up. Tried a couple more times before 9:00pm. Never got through. Next morning got through and finally got through after waiting until 9:00 cst. (Meanwhile I tried to call Air 72 direct to seemif they could help. Got a recording.
