Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

MY air conditioner stopped working on a Thursday evening. I called them that night and by by 1:00 PM on the next day my a/c was repaired and working fine! Great response and a fine company they sent out. I have used them before and always had the best experience with them. I highly recommend AHS.

I don't understand how AHS can be rated 4.5 stars and called "excellent." My experience is similar to others I've read here. I had a one year service contract provided by the seller of the home I purchased in Florida in March 2015. A number of appliances and systems started to go bad during the first year and initially I felt confident and hopeful that I was covered with an AHS warranty. Unfortunately things went awry quickly. I have Daikan split air AC systems in the home and several of them started to go bad. Despite having several Daikan system specialist examine and report that the system needed to be replaced, AHS fought the recommendation every step of the way. We had multiple... Read More

This company has perfected the medical insurance model of not resolving problems and finding ways to not cover your needs. I would highly recommend never adding this warranty to your home. I don't care of the homeowner throws it in as part of the package, choose another company. Complete Joke!!!!

Since American Home Shield does not allow you post negative reviews, I've had to circumvent their system to post this publicly. I would NEVER actually recommend them to friends and family as they have treated us horribly. We submitted a claim on April 3rd when our refrigerator broke. Fast forward five weeks, after hours and hours and hours spent on the phone and three visits by a repair technician, American Home Shield informed us today that we could need to wait another nine days to receive the necessary part to fix our fridge. That puts our total wait time to seven weeks. Seven weeks without a basic household appliance! In those seven weeks, American Home Shield has ordered the wrong... Read More

IF I COULD GIVE AMERICAN HOME SHIELD A “-100 STARS”, I WOULD. On Thursday, April 27th, two weeks ago today, I requested service for my refrigerator, dishwasher, and oven. I received no response until Monday, May 1st. The young lady informed me that the earliest repair date would be May 10. Of course, the food in the refrigerator was already GONE. The thought of waiting 9 days to have my refrigerator repaired boggled my mind. Unfortunately, as the saga has unfolded, that would turn out to be the easiest thing for me to grasp. I called on May 2, and spoke with a very polite representative. She attempted to get me into a queue which should’ve gotten service to me before the... Read More

You cannot pick your vendor of choice. So I was given a horrible AC company to come and fix my AC. This AC company is well known for horrible customer service, expertise and professionalism. So why does AHS use them??? Beats me! Also, when calling AHS for anything other than to receive a quote or request service, you are put on hold for well over 20 minutes. If that customer service rep has to call the vendor, then you're just out of luck!! You are on hold for at least another 20-30 minutes. As I'm writing this poor review for AHS, I've been on the phone with them for 41:37 minutes and I've been only hold for 37 minutes of that 41:37+ minutes. Do not waste your time with AHS...find... The Rep found the problem within 5 minutes and my refrigerator repair was successfully completed within 25 minutes. If you are at all concerned, don't be...American Home Shield delivers!
