Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

The customer service when I called AHS was wonderful. The majority of the representatives I spoke with were helpful and nice. However, the contractors were lacking. The first contractor was one that I have had a bad experience with in the past, with an exorbitant amount of negative online reviews. I am not sure why AHS still uses them as they have consistently given poor service and even poorer customer service. I called AHS to get a new contractor. Contractors two and three made a combined total of 7 visits to replace the exact same part three times. This is absurd to me. The fourth contractor (substantially older than the others, which I am taking to mean wiser and more experienced)... Read More

Just got a call from AHS (Daryl) and he handled the problem. He was very professional and helped me out. He is sending me a refund. So glad he got back with me in less than an hour. I will keep the insurance and hope the customer service does a better job in the future. Thanks Christina Sims

So far I have had very good experiences with AHS. This has been a bad year I had to replace my water heater, upstairs AC and now my dishwasher. So far all the techs have been knowledgeable and professional. I guess after 15+ years repairs are bound to happen. I came to AHS from 2/10 warranty, for some reason their premiums kept going up each year even thought I did not use them often. If after this year the premiums stay the same I will be happy. Also I like that you added the feature of paying the service fee online before the tech arrives. This allows me to be able to get a technician dispatched when only my family members can be present to help out. Just keep the premiums level and we... Read More

I called a AC repair man to fix my AC unit over the weekend. I called to get a C# this morning and they told me I should of called before hand and I would not get a refund. I have been with you for 10 years so June 1 I want my policy cancelled 209433952 and i am changing company's. I was not aware of the policy. You need to get customer service to compromise with customers. One time would of not hurt to compromise to my problems. I have said good things about your company but I am through with non satisfaction. I work in a Dr's office and we always put the patient and customers first.

The review im going to give is based on an experience we recently had with an American Home Shield contractor. The contractor collects a cash payment for services rendered, leaves a receipt. The contractor writes in his notes no cash payment collected, causing an invoice to generate from American Home Shield, The first one being 3/28/17 a call was made to AHS and the rep stated he would take care of it , did not notate the account nor did he take care of issue. May second statement comes asking for monies already paid , we call AHS and talk with rep she calls the contractor while we are on the line they are closed. Monday may 8th we call AHS rep calls contractor while we are on the... Read More

Called AHS about 2 leaking outside faucets. Plumbers came and had no parts, so was rescheduled 4 days later. When they arrived, they stated they could not do the repairs because they could not get to the faucets to make repairs. They did cut a hole in one inside wall, which has been left that way. Was told I would have to get someone at my expense to take siding off house for plumbing access to fix both leaks. I am not a plumber by any means. I took the top off faucets and took them to hardware store and bought two 49 cent washers and fixed both leaks. I still had to pay the $75 service fee and I still have a hole in my inside wall. Do not feel I got best professional services.

Same day response! I was greatly surprised! Technician arrived at the time projected and checked out my air conditioner and to my amazement, I did not have to purchase another unit as I had been told by another technician. It has been more than a month since the technician repaired the unit and it's still working great.

I would give AHS a NEGATIVE star if I could. Just as others have posted HORRIBLE service with AHS, we ended up canceling our contract. The AC "technician" they sent out was UNPROFESSIONAL, rude and arrogant. When we called to complain, the supervisor in the "Escalation Department (Tamika), was the exact same way. Tried going through their Customer Service Specialist (Pam) and she was also worthless. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY AND BUY A CONTRACT. You WILL be frustrated and just be spending good money. Still waiting on our refund check but have a cancellation number and will definitnely have our attorney handle if not received.
