The company offers service contracts that cover the repair or replacement of major components of home systems and appliances. Customers can also purchase optional coverage for pools and spas, guest houses, home electronic systems, roof leaks, maintenance services, and more.

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

We have used American Home Shield several times. This time the vendor was great. The air conditioning was not working and that day he showed up and within a few minutes had it working. He was honest and knowledgeable. Customer service this time jumped on getting the vendor here because of the Arizona heat they understood the emergency problem.

I would say , I had the most AWSOME experience ever. It was in May my daughter getting married our AC went out with family coming in so you can imagine. I called and explain to customer service and behold had them here the same day. Needless to say I felt American Shield came in at the time I really didn't need another task on my plate at that time. By the way our cantractor was very helpful..

I had trouble with my pool pump and the technician from Blue Point Pool Services arrived on time and was very efficient. I had been told by a pool company that I needed a new pump but in fact after power washing the filters and changing a few parts the pump is working perfectly

Our dishwasher was removed and replaced very quickly, expertly and carefully. We were amazed that so much thought was put in it concerning the floor, cabinets and cleanliness. We really appreciated this service.

I've never called for a service that I wasn't put on hold for a long time. On some calls you need to speak to someone not just use the internet such as an emergency call. On a non emergency call it takes a week for a contractor to come out. I called for an emergency after hours call because my whole house was flooding. They could find no one to come out. I got on the phone and the first person I called agreed to come out immediately. It will cost me a pretty penny which defeats the purpose of having American Hone Shield. I'm going to cancel my contract but I've read of horror stories of trying to do this.

Interminable waits on hold – average length of time on hold, EVERY call, was just at 50 minutes – to speak to CSRs, who don't do what they promise to do, and service providers who don't understand the concept of “mutually acceptable”, and finding out repeatedly that the service providers don't communicate with AHS when there's a problem, and vice versa, are no-one's idea of efficient customer service.

I received very excellent service from AHS and from the plumber who replaced my water heater. AHS got in touch with the plumber who was here in a short period of time and analyzed the problem and contacted AHS with the information needed, then went and picked up new water heater and came back, got it installed, had hot water shortly after that and the wife was HAPPY again. Very professional service from all involved. Highly recommend AHS!

Don't plan on getting AHS to replace anything. This is the worst company we have ever dealt with. My suggestion DO NOT USE AMERICAN HOME SHIELD ! Rip off!

American Home Shield took over 5 days to research and send a refrigerator repair person. When this person came out he said that the LG refrigerator's problem was beyond his ability. Next, Sears Repair Company was sent out. The man AHS sent out through Sears claimed that it needed a compressor, and it was thus ordered and sent to our home. 2 weeks later another Sears repair person came out and said the initial Sears person did not diagnose the problem correctly and ordered more parts, but claimed he could only schedule us for another appointment 2 weeks out.
