Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

August 20, 2016 I called American Home Shield regarding my dishwasher not draining. Today is November 18th, 2016 and this issue has still NOT been resolved. Four technicians and a $125 charge, plus they made me call a plumber to change the copper line - that was not necessary, and I was charged another $125 - so I have paid $250. They have finally agreed to replace my dishwasher and they e-mailed me the 800 number to call. So far I'm still on hold and it's been 1 hour and 6 minutes waiting for someone to answer the phone. Would I recommend American Home Shield to the consumer that pays monthly for this warranty service. NO CHANCE. THANKSGIVING IS NEXT WEEK and I work, so there are... Read More

Repair request put in late August for Refrigerator. Over ten visits later, refrigerator is not repaired and AHS does not acknowledge the issue.

we had a problem with the ice maker on our refrigerator and notified AHS. They responded within 15 minutes and set up an appointment with Sears to service it. Service person arrived, replaced the malfunctioning valve. Wife was happy and if she is happy, I am very glad. Thanks AHS.

We have had several claims for issues on our house and American Home Shield and their contractors have responded quickly each time. Contractors arrived when they were suppose to and were very professional and courteous.

The most recent experience was having a technician have to come back to the house to investigate the lack of cool air after only a month of having the HVAC repaired for a faulty coil. The tech determined the unit had an additional coolant leak due to a faulty weld within the unit. In extremely warm weather, he worked hard and long to repair the unit. He even had to leave for a small period of time to get some gas for the welding. All is good and cool at this time.

Very dissatisfied with AHS, I called for a service call for my kitchen faucet that was broken. It took 3 weeks before the plumber came to repair/replace my faucet. He had made 2 previous appointments, he cancel one, and never showed up for the 2nd appointment. At that time he said the faucet/part he ordered was on back order, I sat and waited 1 hour 15 minutes for his service call, he never showed up. On the 3rd appointment AHS is saying they can only replace my faucet with a compatible product. My faucet is a Moen valued at approx $200.00. which is not what they are willing to do. The plumber claims the faucet is fixed by his manipulation. I tried turning on the water, and heard a... Read More

Company fails to accommodate to help provide service within 24 hours when Ac or refrigeration is needed. Both my systems went in different times down and was advised had to wait 48 hours for an appointment to be set up. This is unacceptable.. I can understand any other items but refrigeration, AC, and plumbing are priorities that need to be address as quickly as possible.

I've just hung up the phone having cancelled my policy with AHS. My first service call ended with a $125 deductible payout, a double wall oven that is still broken and headache upon head ache. I've dealt with unprofessional service providers, repairmen and AHS customer service reps. The entire process has been atrocious. I will never recommend AHS and believe that your #1 ranking of them is unfounded and laughable. I've been a customer for two years now and after this experience, I'm willing to pay out of pocket for repairs than ever deal with them or their unprofessional representatives and inferior contractors.

They are terrible. My oven has been broken since April 2016 and now its November and it is still not fixed. The vendor removed the part and never sent it in to be fixed. Also, to get status you can’t get a hold of customer service; I have waited over an hour just to get in touch with a human being only then to hold another 45 min to talk to someone else. They partner with less than great vendors that just take your money and don't fix not a single thing. I am so disappointed and frustrated that I may not have a working oven for Thanksgiving and no one seems to care.

Not at all happy. Very slow response times, poor contractor's and inflexible plan. For our ice maker it was ok. When our water heater went out and it should be covered but it takes 24 hours to get a contractor to call, then 24-48 hours for an appointment, then 24 hours for a follow up report.... all the while with no hot water!! Unacceptable. I would not recommend AHS.
