Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

If your thermostat took a couple of minutes to kick in and then was 3 degrees off, would you consider it broken? According to American Home Shield and American Appliance out of Riverton, that is not a failure and does not deserve to be replaced. Spread the word to avoid them both. In the past they have tried to do the minimum, replacing a 1/2 hp disposal with a 1/3, a deluxe dishwasher with a very basic, cheap model, etc. If you are going to use them, make sure you are pro-active because they are really in it for the dollar. The customer comes second.,

Horrible experience.... refrigerator broke 4 weeks until fixed. Took 10 days to get part and AHS was not willing to do anything even when they failed to order part timely. AHS thought reasonable to go 4 weeks without refrigerator whic is not acceptable. You dont know how good or bad your warranty is until you use it. Previously recommended AHS to others but contacting them about my experience and to reconsider at contract renewal. My family went 4 weeks without a refrigerator and AHS did not care. Beware!!!!

American Home Shield has done a good job as far as covering what is under contract and an absolutely appalling job having enough customer service people to man the phones. Every time I have called during the last 5 months I have been on extended holds. I just carry my phone with me until it's answered. Today it was 1 hour and 20 minutes!!!!!!!!!!! All I needed to do was respond to an email from them to approve an appliance purchase. I had sent an email 3 days ago saying it was approved by me but I could not tell where that email was to be sent so it may have ended up in space somewhere. Awful!!

I'm in the process of looking for a new company. I've had AHS for 9 years and most of the time I've had great service however the last two experiences have been horrible. I have been out of hot water for 8 days. I contractor was sent to my house on the 18th I was told I don't have pressure regulator value by the contractor and the services would not be covered by AHS. The contractor said they could put one in but it would cost me 325.00 out of pocket, then I would need to hire a leak locator (out of pocket). I told my husband who was at work and he informed me we have a prv...called AHS and explained they tell me until the contractor submits his paperwork we cant move forward and they will... Read More

MOST HORRIBLE EXPERIENCES WORKING WITH A COMPANYRepeatedly the most horrendous service company I have ever worked worth. Each of the contractors sent out have either supplied inaccurate, impertinent, irrelevent or no information at all. This starts the call of with NOT COVERED. The contractors are nice enough people of course but the most ill qualified I've ever seen. I HIGHLY recommend looking into higher quality and attn to client and detail companies or just save your money for a rainy day until something breaks. I gave them over 6 months for an idiot contractor who couldn't end up doing it all then to come up with $6800 to pay a quality company and only received around $1400 cash in... Read More

Every time I put a work order in their position was either my home is not up to code they can't do the work or they won't totally cover my home items. I have to pay a copay. They tel me to refer to my contract. I've never received a contract. It's not worth the monthly fee I pay😰😰😰

I have had this warranty for over a decade and the customer service the two times I have called has been horrible. They contract with low budget unprofessional contractors who also provide poor customer service... i have been getting the run around for almost a week with no hot water and have heard similar stories from others. I am going to have to purchase a water heater on my own because i can keep going without hot water. I honestly believe this is a scam that they encourage so that they don't have to replace your appliances.

I have never disliked a company as much as American Home Shield. We had two different properties covered and they consistently made billing mistakes and applied money incorrectly even though we clearly labeled account numbers on each check. Each time we would set up a monthly withdrawl with them they never failed to take out more than what we were told would be taken out so unless you watch every dollar that leaves your account I would not suggest using this option. We had taken our accounts off the automatic withdrawl and just sent in checks using bill pay with a bank account and they would send us collection notices because they wouldnt allow us to pay monthly unless they took it... I have been with American Home Shield for 2 years. Have made 3 trouble calls. Each has been like pulling teeth, and getting poor service from AHS and the vendor. Cheap parts and terrible bare bone repairs. Now I have a refrigerator broken and they act like they could care less and here comes the same terrible vendor. I done with them. Find a different company.

Very dissatisfied with customer service. Had plumbing issue and had no water for 4 days. They brought an inexperienced plumber that said would cost me couple thousand in remodeling. Plus my claim got denied when it was covered. They wi try to get out of paying anything. Called my own plumber and cost me hardly anything with no remodeling needed and got my water turned on within an hour. AHS takes forever to communicate any feedback to customers it seems.
