Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Very hard to talk to customer service wait time 35-60 min. Some of their service companies are not dependable. Service appointments are usually made promptly!!

At one point we had three houses covered by AHS, later it was two. We had been a customer for 12 years. We experienced a plumbing problem and it was repaired and shortly after that we had the same problem with the same pipe. Another contractor was called to fix the problem and they did. However, the contractor stated the pipe had been leaking from the first repair and our vanity was destroyed. The leak was repaired and we contacted AHS to discuss the vanity that was destroyed because of the first contractor's negligence. AHS told us that we had to discuss this with the contractor directly. We stated that they hired the contractor and that they should lead the discussion and make us... Read More

Appliance RX was very customer friendly. They called in a timely manner, They were flexible with their scheduling as much as they could be, and called when they were en route. They were thorough in explaining the next steps. When the parts arrived they were in fairly quickly. The contractor was very knowledgeable about the appliance and completed the job efficiently and quickly.

If you call them you need to set aside at least 90 minutes to be on hold. When they need to replace an item because it is not fixable, that division will put you on hold for another 90 minutes. They do not offer to call you back, just hold forever.

Last two service calls did not meet my expectations. My repairs were not completed, the technicians did not return my follow-up phone calls, and the pricing (for items not covered by my warranty) quoted by AHS was higher than the two other plumbing companies that came to my house and gave estimates on the repair. Very unhappy customer.

We were contacted as promised by the service provider. The technician was prompt. He had been here before as he worked on a similar problem in our other bathroom. He had to order the part needed. The part came in and he returned to complete the job.

All our experiences with American Home Shield have been positive, however a couple of the contractors have not been very reputable. Upon letting AHS know about them, different contractors were sent out and issues were resolved. AHS willingness to assist in rectifying incompetent contractors is a very good thing. For this reason, we have referred countless family and friends to AHS.

The service technicians who have been to my home have all been clean courteous and professional. Repairs were made in a timely manner and we are always highly satisfied. AHS is always prompt in processing our claims and always offer first class service. I'm so thankful for my AHS policy. It's worth the price of the policy and more.

Great if you can do everything online. However try to call and customer service is awful. I was on hold 48 minutes ( my phone timed it) before I had to give up.

While reading a number of the negative reviews for AHS, I see a pattern that unfortunately we have experienced. Our 35 year old AC in our Florida condo, that has serviced routinely, stopped working. We called our regular certified AC specialist and he felt it was beyond routine repair. AHS was called and sent a techni cian that was neither able to repair it nor personable. The following day, the same issue was apparent. He was called and said he was going away for the weekend and would return in 4 days. It was 89 degrees in the condo and we had contractors laying tile. Of course work had to stop. We requested a second technician (Bobby) and he said there was no fixing the AC. It had to be... Read More
