Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

We had a convection microwave that quit working. I called American Home Shield and told them that the microwave was not heating. We had a call the next day from the service company that was sending out a repairman the next day. He was extremely knowledgeable about our microwave but did not have one of the parts he needed to replace. He ordered it as we talked and returned two days later to repair the microwave. The serviceman was efficient. timely and very professional. American Home Shield contracts with reliable repair companies that care about customer service.

AHS is a very respectable company providing a great service to many Americans. My recent dealings with AHS, they provided me with very timely service and an outstanding, friendly contractor. He diagnosed the issue very quickly and cleaned up promptly afterward. Although he couldn't resolve my issue, he reported the issue so we could make a decision quickly on getting our appliance replaced and our lives back to normal.

My experience with American Home Shield was as always professional and pleasant. The phone call was quick, the contractor got back to us in a timely manner and repairs were done as quickly and well as could be expected. We are landlords of two property in two different states and we depend on AHS for all of our repair needs.

After a warranty call to AHS Mr.Appliance was dispatched to my home. This is not the first time they have been to my home to provide service through AHS and I am actually quite familiar with them. Even this tech has been to my house previously. On this occasion Victor Parker the service tech misdiagnosed a leak with my dishwasher. We had called because there was water under our dishwasher and we were hoping we caught it before any damage was done. The tech removed the front kick plate and diagnosed the problem as a leaking pump and motor. After the service was finished and we were given the green light to use the dishwasher again we noticed after the weekend that the hardwood floor in our... Read More

I worked with American Home Shield. Before buying their package, they promised many things including repair and replace. Two months later we had problems with our AC and American Home Shield neither properly repaired our AC nor replaced it. They had many reasons not to help us. I felt that they were more interested in getting my monthly payments than helping us with our problem.

The last two service requests have been very prompt and stress free. Contractors typically have responded to my request within two days or less. The automated voice system used to process service requests is easy to navigate and time efficient.

Contractor had to make two visits because the part needed was not listed correctly on their computer system. When the contractor was able to replace the part all went well. The worker was quite knowlegeable and was done as as soon as he could be.

I am very satisfied with American Home Shield's service. Every time I've contacted them they immediately and proficiently contacted a professional contractor in resolving my problem which was repaired in a professional and timely manner. Also the company that was contracted maintained efficient cleanliness throughout their stay. Thank you for excellent service.

I have had AHS for 13 years, with good results. HOWEVER, My Heat pump just died. I have had repairmen SENT BY AHS for the past 6-7 years, due to a Freon leak. Every year in the past, the Freon was replaced, and the unit was "fixed". When Freon was included in the repair cost, this was not a problem. AHS started to give a $10/lb rebate for freon, the rest was my responsibility, ($100/lb), due to the rising cost of Freon-HOWEVER, one company introduced Sealant to my system, and charged $35/lb. This is the FIRST problem...you are stuck with whomever the want to send, YOU can't request the Repair company, you get who they send. This year, the repairman came in, measured my system, THEN...
