Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Overall, I am very pleased with my experences so far. I have had only a few calls that did not go well (didn't call for service, never came, came but did not fix the problem, came and then invalidated the service call). The majority have gone very well (fast response, good service man, repsectful, clean, on time, completd the job, didn't overcharge me, the rapairs were completed under contract, no hidden charges).

Upon reporting my air conditioner needed repair, the customer service at American Home Shield was right on it. They kept me informed every step of the way as to who was coming to do the repairs, when and then checked to see that the work had been done. The detail work of the customer service on my behalf could not have been better. The contractor was satisfactory and the fellows actually doing the work were so polite and determined to make sure all was working properly before they left it was nice to have a pleasant work experience.

The last time I used AHS was for a faulty furnace. The tech was here the next day and diagnosed the problem almost immediately (it was the thermostat). Everything was handled very professionally. I am very satisfied with AHS and the contractor.

This company engages HORRIBLE contractors! We canceled our policy after being assigned ANOTHER UNPROFESSIONAL contractor. Although we contacted AHS to explain our concerns and ask for a different contractor, we where denied any options, I was literally told, "YOU DON"T HAVE A CHOICE TO PICK WHO COMES INTO YOUR HOME, AHS has the RIGHT TO CHOOSE" WHAAAAAAT? Formal complaints have been filed on both AHS and contractors they engage with. DO YOUR HOMEWORK, read reviews and make calls! Sadly, AHS was recommended to us by real estate professionals, however, they have been informed and are now making other recommendations. Do Not Engage...Warning!

Several years ago, I had my furnace break down. All I paid was the $75 service fee to the contractor that AHS sent over. AHS paid for the rest of the furnace replacement costs. Last month my hot water heater failed and like the furnace could not be repaired. But this time they did not pay the total cost. They said if I paid the total price ($1,409.47) they would reimburse me the cost of the new tank plus the cost to remove the old tank and put in the new tank ($591.53). Now they are telling me they will only pay $338.21. When you call them it can take 1 to 2 hours on hold before they pickup the phone. They used to be a great company but they now suck.

The experience was most professional from the First Phone Call for service of the problem at hand, then completely through the successful attainment of the needed service and service person, who was prompt , professional, and timely in assessing the situation and correcting the problem. American Home Shield is the right choice and answer to a Home Owner in need of protection and help with most household protection and service needs...

Jackson Mechanical Heating & Air provided exceptional service. The contractors were very professional and went above and beyond to get my air conditioner up and running properly. I was very pleased with their service due to the fact they had to come out numerous times to check the efficiency of the air conditioner. Tammy at the call center was pleasant and very helpful in assuring me that the problem would be taken care of. She would call before the service guy arrived to let me know they were on their way.

Horrible service!!!!! On the phone for HOURS waiting to speak to actual being. Waited five hours on hold off and on and a co. that AHS had sent out before; more about that later... Had a water leak, fitting busted and I turned water off. I called AHS several times and listened to horrible music the whole time. Several calls and most of these "timed out"?. FINALLY spoke to, lets just say her name was 'ROBIN'. she gave me a number for after hours to the company mentioned above! WTC. This # was not correct but the nice gentleman on the other end ask who i was trying to reach. When I told him AHS his ticker started ticking and I was listening better than AHS, HORRIBLE STORY, but back to my... Read More

The assigned service company did not show for the appointment until 3 hours after the scheduled 4 hour window had expired. When I called AHS, the representative neither cared that I spend all day waiting for the service tech nor that the AHS supported company did not honor the appointment tiemframe. The company didn't call me and report their delay until I called the service tech who promptly called back and lied about actually showing up at my home within an hour. AHS' lack of concern for this issue will equate to me leaving AHS after 9 years for a company that cares for those paying them $500 per year.

I had a great experience with my recent airconditioner service. AHS and the service company were very professional and responsive. The technician showed up on time and diagnosed the problem very quickly. He was very professional and thorough and I would highly recommend his service again.
