Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

We recently had a repair request for one of our a/c units. The first contractor sent to us said he did not know how to fix the unit.He said he thought that it had a leak somewhere in the gas lines. He told me to reschedule a visit by calling your office again. After doing this you sent another contractor by the name of United Air Temp of Norcross, Ga. This company has repaired these systems before, and as before did it promply and correctly. They were professional and courtious .They explained the need to change out the gas in the unit and charged me for muchless pounds as the first contracter said it would require. I am very pleased with your company, and as a Developer,Real Estate Agent... Read More

Filing a claim is super easy to do; I did it online and within 48 hours the plumbing contractor came out. The plumbing contractor replaced my garbage disposal within 10 minutes and he was out! So fast and friendly too.

There were probably number 1 five years ago when I first bought home insurance. Since then I've bought insurance for another house and unfortunately the service has done the drain. 1. Every time you call customer service, the wait time is 40-60 minutes 2. The contractors they work with suck and take days to fix a simple thing. I recently placed an order for an AC repair on 7/25/2016. Today is 8/4/2016 and my AC is still not fixed yet. Oh, and where I live, the temperature is 110F every day!! 3. Poor customer service. Despite multiple e-mails and phone call, AHS has failed to do anything about my AC. Believe me when I say, stay away from American Home Shield. You have been warned!!

The hold times to call into the company exceed any reasonable amount of time to be expected. My client was on hold 1.2 hours just to initiate a claim before his call was answered.

My most recent experience with AHS was a positive one. The scheduling department was knowledgeable and very helpful in trying to get the right contractor to my home to assess and resolve my issues. The contractor assigned to fix my hot water heater were professional, consider, and knowledgeable about the system. The time it took for them to resolve my issue was a little stressful but it was finally resolved. SWG's receptionist was very helpful and kept me informed with their procedures and timelines.

Our last serviceman was on time and very courteous. He knew about our special circumstances, and worked with us when he had to order a special replacement part for the oven. He responded immediately when we let him know that the part had arrived, and he came by when he received our call. He also gave us tips for how to run the oven more efficiently. We were very satisfied with this serviceman and the service call.

I feel that the companies they work with are not good. Have had problems repeatedly and they keep sending the same company to fix the same problem in the same month. Also, they're too busy to answer their phones. Have waited 45 minutes 4 times in 3 days. Got through one time.

Had trouble with first contractor. Called AHS to complain and they promptly assigned a different contractor. That contractor was prompt, courteous and completed the job. AHS personnel were very professional and efficient.

The last experience was complex, I had two contractors come out to my house, one of which told me I didn't need him because the issue should have been handled by the primary contractor. However, AHS was quick about sending both of the companies out to my home.

American Home Shield is a complete scam, I should've went with my gut feeling- but the "reviews" claimed that this was a good company. First of all- do not expect to speak to anyone on the phone (for any reason other than purchasing a warranty), without first being on hold for 15+ minutes- no exaggeration. AHS's Contractors have a special phone number so they can get right through, but us "customers" have to sit and wait. Second- there is no way to appeal any decision, what they say is final. I know for a FACT that one of my covered items went bad- I saw it happen right in front of my eyes, but according to their "contractor", it was caused by something totally different, which, SURPRISE!-...
