Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I live in a small rural area with limited contract repair services, so getting a contractor out for an immediate repair is difficult. Despite that, the last repair was done within a 4 day period. The AHS representative during the initial request was courteous, understanding and professional. The contractor was clean, courteous, knowledgeable and professional; he took the time to explain the repair, its cause and the final result.

Our clothes dryer was not heating. The repairman diagnosed the problem promptly. They had to order a part, so it took a few days, but when he returned, the problem was fixed and we have had no problems since. Good job.

1. if you like being on a telephone holding forever, this would be the company for you. 2) if you want to have the instructions you provide (pertaining to the service call) on their internet page NOT followed, this would be the company for you. 3) if you would like to wait a full day (10 hrs) on the day of the scheduled service appointment only to find the service company is a no-show, this would be the company for you. 4) when you decide you want to cancel your policy/contract be prepared to spend another 30 minutes holding on the telephone, only to learn a cancellation rep will call you back in 24 hrs or less.

Central air unit stop blowing cold air. Called AHS and they sent a request to a listed contractor. The contracted called us within 24 hours and scheduled an arrival time to look at the unit. The contracted arrived early at the set time and quickly went to work on the problem. Within minutes, he identified the problem, explained the situation and corrected the issue. He was quick, courteous, friendly and very professional.

We have had American Home Shield for 11 years. Service just kept getting worse and worse. Several years ago, we went 3 months without heat during the winter, because the repair people they kept sending could not figure out what was wrong. I had to call the company president (talked to his assistant) before any satisfaction. I had to hire my own people and they paid for it. The last time they sent someone to work on our heat pump, the workman worked on the wrong unit, broke a pipe in the attic and it flooded the house. Thankfully our insurance company took care of it from there. Our rate just went from $26 per month to over $100 per month because we used them when we need them. My... Read More

Not true, I'm stuck in a contract with them right now, recently sent out Allegiant Appliance Services who used my vacuum and to clean around motor and coils when repairing my refrigerator, removed a much needed specially designed filter that covers the bottom of the fridge to protect inside parts. Results, burned out my vacuum motor due to sucking up bearings and or pieces of coil and said sorry your vacuum is broke and refused to fix it, still sits in a vacuum repair shop. Refused to replace the filter on bottom of fridge, Sears claims my refrigerator motor will not be protected now unless I pay for them to come out and properly replace the right part, but I would have to do it out of... AHS just replaced our furnace and everyone that we have to deal with was very much the professional. The service could not have been better from all involved. The contractor answered my questions and arrived to put in a new furnace before the Thanksgiving holiday and the weather turning colder! I have recommended AHS to everyone I know. I am in the real estate business and have seen a lot of home warranties and truly believe AHS is the best one.

We have enjoyed the peace of mind knowing that AHS stands behind our major appliances and potential costly repairs. We haven't used the warranty in over a year but the few time we did need to rely on AHS they came through as expected building our confidence along the way. Now we won't go without the coverage. Period.

Service request on air conditioner placed on Tuesday morning. No call from assigned contractor for 2 days even after repeated calls to the assigned contractor. Called American Home Shield Warranty to complain. They contacted the assigned contractor and told him they were going to assign another contractor if he didn't respond to us. The assigned contractor then called us and informed us he was too busy and wouldn't be able to make a service call until the following Monday, 6 days later. Called American Home Shield Warranty again to complain. They called the assigned contractor again and the contractor made a service call to us on Thursday. During the service call the contractor determined... Read More

VERY disappointed in their customer service! I will be canceling my contract and going with another company. After the initial contractor was sent out and couldn't do the repair, I was told by AHS that Is was not covered, I paid out of pocket to have the repair done. AHS, three weeks later, scheduled another contractor to do the repair, as it was, in fact, a covered item. I called to find out what was going on and explained that I was told it wasn't covered and have already had the repair done. I asked to be reimbursed since it was actually covered, I was told flat out no! Because I sent another company out that was not authorized by them. I sent an email to the claims department...
