Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

We have used AHS for over 5 years now with no complains at all and have recommended AHS to a number of people; and many of them have signed up and so far satisfied with their services. However, I don't exactly know what to think of it right now. Today, me and my family have completed exactly 13 days with no AC under very harsh heat conditions (94% humidity) here in the midwest (West Chester Oh). what started as a simple part to be ordered, it is now a wait and see when we will have AC back. it took 5 days for the part to get to the contractor, then 2 days for the contractor to give us an appointment but surprise: the part was the wrong one. the contractor is blaming AHS and AHS is blaming... Don't use American Home Shield if you live in northeastern Kentucky in the tri- state area. I've had two home warranties with American Home Shield. The first was in Lexington, KY. In Lexington, the contractor they sent did a great job. Due to a job transfer we ended up in a much smaller town in northeastern Kentucky. Having experienced great service in Lexington, we chose to use American Home Shield again. The results were horrible. The plumbers they sent to our home were awful...unprofessional, rude and incompetent. When I had to request a second service call, I tried to get AHS to send a different plumber. They didn't have anyone else to send. We also needed electrical... Read More

We have been using American home shield for 4 years and had no problems up to now. During the peak heat of July in Arizona we had a problem with our condenser. AHS sent a repairman from Sonic mechanical who was unable to complete the repair that day and who then scheduled a follow up 2 days later. A different person showed up who spoke very poor english and spent a great deal of time on the repair. He also told us he was unable to complete the repair as we needed a new compressor. Why this was not determined on the first visit I don't know. He said that the part would be ordered the following monday. Over 5 days went by without a status update. When I called the repair service a woman... Read More

For the past few years, my AC unit has been a problem during the summer months. AHS has been coming out several times during the summer and the unit will work a few months then stop. The unit is very old and need replacing but they keep sending a provider out to fix or patch it up and within a few months the same thing is happening again. The worst part about this is that when I finally reach someone on the phone to report need of service, the provider, usually the same one can't schedule an appointment until 4 to 5 days later. I live in Florida and in the summer the heat is over 100 degrees. This is too long to be without an air conditioner. I feel that the provider they use should... Read More

We live in Phoenix, AZ and our AC went out in May. It is almost mid July and our unit is still not working. When I called to place the work order with their customer service back in May, the girl that took my call was completely incompetent and failed to answer my questions. During a 30 minute call, I spent about 25 of those minutes on hold for her to come back with with a one or two word response to my questions. She finally dispatched All Star Refrigerant to my home. The contractor with this company called me to set up an appointment for the following day but then did not show up. When he finally arrived he indicated that my unit needed refrigerant and charged me $350 with the impression... Read More

I had a water leak on the water line to the ice maker. When the line was installed they did now show me where the shut off was. When they came out they had to look for it. When they found it, they changed it so it is now right behind the refrigerator. It is easy to get to.

Currently having issues with our heat pump. Upon contacting AHS the contractor called and was at my house that afternoon. Although he was unable to fix the issue, currently working on getting item replaced. AHS has responded very professionally and quickly in assisting me.

I was just on hold the first time I called today on 7/9/16 for over 35 minutes( recording said it would be 10 minutes). After receiving a service # for my appliances I called Sears at the 800 # provided to confirm appointment ASAP, who informed me, (she was very difficult to understand), that they didn't service Hot Point(GE appliances) one appliance was GE the other Hot Point. My understanding they are the same company. So I called back to AHS at 11:57AM (recording said wait would be over 10 minute) and finally Marcus answered, I kid you not at 12:54 PM ,which was 3 minutes short of an hour hold. I rarely call for service which I have had for a very long time on my house, but question... Read More

I have been an AHS customer for over 4 years, paying over $100 per month for home warranty (my house is new and greater than 5000 square ft). We have close to none service claims ( can't remember the last time we called for service). This year my pool servicing company identified a couple of issues. I placed a service request online on AHS website. A pool service company (Platinum Contractors) called that is NOT local to my house and does not service my area on Fridays. They are asking somebody to available essentially the entire day so that come whenever they like during the day. They gave me one appointment option that was unacceptable to me and next appointment was weeks away. I was... Read More
