Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I would rate this company and negative negative ZERO the worst company ever. The companies they have sub contracted through them are unprofessional and thieves and rude. They don't take care of emergencies on hand. They make you wait days to weeks for them to fix issues you have. They take forever to replace items when they can't fix them. They give the paying customers a hard way to go when they don't fix issues you have. This company is high way robbery and the worst customer service of all time.

If I could I would give no stars. My AC went out on June 25. We contacted AHS, paid our $100 service fee, and a contractor (Acentric Inc) was assigned. The technician come out looked at the AC and stated he couldn't fix it. He would fill out a report and get right back to us. After hearing nothing for a week. I called AHS, who apologized for the poor service and assigned a new contractor (Perfect Mechanical in Elgin, IL) and set up an appointment for the next day. The contractor didn't show and didn't call. I called Perfect Mechanical for three days getting only voice mail, finally, I called AHS. They apologized and set up another appointment for the following Monday. The contractor didn't... Read More

My air conditioner was not cooling. I called American Hime Shield and was immediately contacted by integrity Air. They came out and replaced a part and it started working. I paid $100 for the service charge . Happy with the results, but not sure how much the part would have been. It was the compasiter or something like that. But overall happy with the service that was provided.

A&L Appliance Repair totally redeemed my faith in American Home Shield. He was honest, competent and upon completion of the task, assured us that if anything went wrong, all we needed to do was call him and he would be over to make sure that the problem was taken care of. We are Senior Citizens and his assurance meant so much to us. With one phone call to American Home Shield and in less than 24 hours, our problem was on its way to a successful resolution. What a great organization.

Just cancelled my policy after nearly 5 months of trying to get a refrigerator fixed. In my experience of the last few months this was by far the WORST customer service ever experienced. The hold times on the phone reached 1 hour and 30 minutes. Hold times on phone were commonly never less than 50 minutes. They refuse to let you speak with a supervisor and constantly gave me the "run around." After months, the refrigerator is still not fixed. The first contractor that was sent out had to return 2 more times before finally calling American Home Shield and telling them the refrigerator was fixed, when they told me they had to order parts...?? My wife then called - was on hold forever... Read More

AHS provided good coverage for my repair. The phone hold wait times are unacceptable, however.

I have been a customer of American Home Shield for a number of years and have used them extensively for repair and replacement service. Occasionally, I have had a bad experience with a service contractor, but AHS usually made it right with a "second opinion". Recently, in the space of two months, My refrigerator and garbage disposal required repair. AHS replaced the garbage disposal in one day. My refrigerator was nonrepairable as parts were no longer available. AHS offered to replace the refrigerator with a comparable make/model or cash option. I selected the cash option and had the check in hand within weeks; however, the current Pandemic made phone communications hectic and time... Read More

As a consumer, we have to be proactive about researching all aspects of what a business offers, and it's no different with this company. Even if you read any positive reviews, 3rd party rankings, etc., I strongly suggest you do your homework about it all. PROS: Home warranty companies are either really, really bad, or cream of the crop. Sorry, autocorrect did it again: CRAP. "Cream of the crap". AHS ranks as one of the top of the foaming, steamy pile. Enjoy! Just embrace the reality, & expect the rough spots-- it could be A LOT worse. CONS: 1.) I waited 78 minutes to get someone from one of their offshore BPOs to help me... to help me train them on what went wrong with their website... Read More

My wife and I have had a home warranty policy with American Home Shield for a number of years. We have taken advantage of our coverage to repair or replace heating and air conditioning systems and a refrigerator. We have managed to save money on large repairs and replacements. Our home is fairly large, and it has multiple systems to accommodate our living requirements. Because of this fact, it is cost effective to have a home warranty from American Home Shield. The one partial drawback is the time it sometimes takes from reporting a claim to having the problem solved. To be fair, American Home Shield did try to work with us to minimize the time delay. I recommend American Home Shield to... Read More
