Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

The company also offers a vast network of pre-screened contractors and technicians, as well as a 24/7 claims department.

Although their service offer is similar to that some competitors, it must be noted that First American contracts are short and easy to understand, which is another feature that potential clients will surely appreciate.

Terrible - never waste your money with this company. I waited 5 days for then to send a water heater. They sent the wrong size, even after I called spoke with rep about importance of size, the plumber did and I sent a message. Each time they said they understood but sent the wrong size anyway. Then they refused to cover addition charge because of wrong size. Essentially I am out $300 because of their mistake and they could care less. Once they get your money - that is where customer service ends.

I rate this company a big fat zero. We have had a claim for our downdraft vent for our Viking cooktop that has remained unresolved for a year now. We have a new claim for our Viking cooktop which has a slow gas leak resulting in accumulation of gas under the cooktop and exploding. 1st American sends 4 different companies to make s report, decides ithe claim is not covered. We told 1st American the technicians do nothing but look at the cooktop that they need to send a Viking repair technician who can look at the inside of the cooktop to determine the problem. They are sending another company which you the way was the company that was supposed to fix our downdraft but couldn’t because they... Read More

This is by far the worst home warranty company and I will never recommend them to anyone looking for coverage. We requested an electrician to come out and look at why our power was unstable. When the electrician arrived he did not even look at the issue and told my husband (who is now deployed) he would not charge him the service fee and that he would come back out another time to see what is going on. Of course we did not hear anything back and this was the end of November 2017 and our service was up in December 2017. But then in January 2018 we started receiving service bills for service we clearly did not receive. This is the worst service i have ever experienced and all they want is to... Read More

My water heater broke Thursday night - I called first thing in the morning and then was told someone will get back to me Yes they sent a Plummer to come out right away but that was to just get a photo of the make and model of my water heater. No call back . The Plummer says it will take about 4 to 5 days but since it’s friday and they don’t work weekends maybe 7 days . I thought this was unexceptable ! I have a child with disabilities and not having any hot water for 4-7 days is not good . So I talked to a supervisor and they said they would do a buy out . Which meant I pay for a Plummer to come in and they pay me back for the tank and labor . So I put 1500 on my CC and then Monday... Read More

i called to get a replacement for my garbage disposal. It had a slow leak apparently, but the other night I had water all over my kitchen floor. I saw that there was some mold, so I called my homeowner's insurance. They came out right away and confirmed I had black mold under the cabinet floor as well. They had to take out all my plumbing from under the sink as well as the cabinets. When I called 1st American, I was told they wouldn't honor the contract because the disposal was removed. I still have the defective disposal. Was I supposed to wait ??? days for 1st American to come out and take it out and replace it? It was a health issue for goodness sake! Last year when my water heater... Read More

I filed a claim for which I paid the deductible. Technician came to my house tried to fix the issue and was unable to. After that I tried to contact them for a period of 3 months and not getting any replies back. 5 months passed since then and nothing was done. Finally i contact the home warranty itself and they told me that I only have 30 days and told me that I have to file new claim again. This is unacceptable. I paid money for nothing. Worst service ever.

This company can't service issues within a timely manner. If you have something break and it is ok that it takes a week to get a service person out to repair it then this company is for you. I had two claims and they wanted me to find a repair company and pay for it and they would reimburse me. it took 5 weeks to get reimbursement on the first claim. I didn't fall for that on the second claim...sump pump needs repaired their contractor can come out in 4 days.....really I will be looking for a new home warranty company after this issue gets resolved.

I filed a claim as to where they took 2 payments out of my bank account. I have yet to be reimbursed, for the amount, nor for the overdraft that it cost by taking that extra payment. I am filing a complaint with the Consumer Affairs Division.

No home warranty company could be worse than First American Home Warranty - I've owned a policy for two years, and in that time they have screwed up three jobs that required repairs. My pool heater needed repair, but after waiting three months and going through two botched repairs with a company FAHW sent that kept claiming they needed another part, I finally called a local pool repair company myself and paid $550 for the repair. No reimbursement from FAHW. Nine months later, a shower valve went down, and it took two months for them to get a repairman here. He installed a new valve - upside down, and to this day, steaming hot water comes from the cold end of the faucet handle, cold water... Read More
