Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

We have been a loyal customer for many years and have filed only a few claims. Recently our AC airhandler shorted out and needed to be replaced. Our claim was denied because we were told it was not normal wear-and-tear. It took over a week for a technician to come to the house, and he was 2 1/2 hours late. He was not very friendly and looked about the same. The first thing out of his mouth when he came to the door was that he needed to collect the deductible. He didn't know why he was here. His workorder only said No AC. He evaluated the damage and left without an estimate or determining a cause. We had to call every day for a week to try to the status of our claim because the technician... Read More

100 degrees outside and air conditioner went out. They sent someone out next day and the "fix" only lasted 12 hours. Called back on Saturday as went out again and said they couldn't get anyone out till at least Monday. Which meant they would get a hold of us and maybe be out by Tuesday. Should have someone service on weekend.

Do not use this company. It is nothing more than a scam and a fraud! My septic light went on and I contacted them and they told me if it is an ejector system it is not covered but if it is a grinder system it is covered. I then receive a call later that day from the same young lady stating that her manager wanted me to know that it may not be covered, even though we established that a grinder pump is covered. 4 days later their tech shows up, determines that it is the float switch, collects $75 and says 'we'll be in touch'. After 3 days I call the tech, Bay Mechanical, and they said I should have received a call from First American and that the repair would not be covered by the warranty... Read More

We waited almost 50 days from date we filed a claim before our A/C was actually repaired. We went through 3 different contractors they sent before it was fixed. The warranty company never returned our calls. We had to initiate each call. I am a realtor and a real estate investor and a homeowner so I am very familiar with how these warranties are supposed to work. This one failed. And wasted hours of my time.

This company is a fraud. They took our fan which was 300.00 dollars put up a fan they said was supposed to be similar and it was 25.00 then told us thats we signed for it when we didn't. I told them that we told the guy we didn't want it and wanted our fan back to fix it and they didn't. They tricked us by coming to take our fan down and for cash out they offered 20.00 are you kidding??? Then they came out to fix our microwave. They said it was not fixable and our microwave would be sent out to us by Sears. They sent a microwave that was the wrong one because they sent over the stove top. We told them our microwave was inside the cabinetry. They said it was our fault because we accepted... Read More

I'd like to compliment one of your employees, Ms. Britney, for the excellent service she has provided to me. Ms. Britney has helped me with the recent unresolved claims which she got involved and is being resolved. I am very pleased with the overall services I have received from her. However, Ms. Britney's professionalism and ability to identify the problems and get to the bottom of the situation quickly has exceeded my expectations and it has certainly been a pleasure working with her. Such a commitment to great customer service is to be commended. Sincerely, Abe Bibizadeh

I have had FAHM coverage for over 13 years across all of my home purchases. In the past when I had a claim it got resolved in the end with only a few hiccups along the way. I do not know what has taken place over there lately but I am convinced they care nothing about their customers. My family has been without AC in the sweltering heat since 4/28 when I placed a claim for service on my three “through the wall” AC’s that cool our home. The main 1st floor unit began leaking and blowing hot air. The two other units on the 2nd floor stopped blowing cool air after being on for an hour or so. One week goes by and I hear nothing from First American. I call in and a rep advises they are... Read More

I have been a customer of 1st American on 2 occasions. The first time was about 8 yrs ago and the service was fantastic so when my new house needed coverage of course I chose 1st American. I have had 3 different claims since having coverage over the last 18 months. The 1st was the heater quit working in December in Texas in my 80 yr old mothers house while we were out of town and the service man simply bypassed the issue with a wire rather than fixing it, more of a rig than a fix; another recently was an AC unit was not cooling, (at the same residence) 80 yr old woman and here in Texas the temp is nearly 100. We were told by 1st American that a service man would call within 24 hrs, no... Read More

I got my home warranty when purchasing my fixer upper home, it was chosen by the seller otherwise I would have gone with American Home Shield ( they are Great). First, My 1st call into this company to find out what the seller had purchased for me was horrible. The lady was rude, she sounded like I was bothering her and then when I wanted to file a service request for my A.C. not working she asked me to do it online. The contractor for the A.C. was a nice guy. But because he helped with some additional items on the A.C. unit that needed fixed and didn't charge but put it in his notes. I now keep receiving calls about how they don't cover that item. And not only that- 1st american wants to... Read More
