Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

My washer and dryer wouldn't work. I placed a claim in Jan and it was finally replaced in March. The washer is a General Electric and the dyer is Kenmore. The doors on both do not match and my washer is taller than my dryer. I was told at least both will be white bc the company is not obligated to provide matching style, color, or brand. I finally left after being with the company for 5 years.

Attention ....... all what I can say is that don't waits your money with this company! I call for a service on my refrigerator on May 8th and as of right now my refrigerator is still not been fix. The Tech can out one time change to board and it didn't work so I called them back, the excuse is that the contractor has not the report. Every time I call I've putting on hold 4-6 min because they have to call the contractor. If I have to continue writing it will be to long. People out there please this is a very bad home warranty company.

I have had my warranty with FA for four years, it seems every year it keeps getting higher. I contacted my friend that is a realtor and gave me the name of a representative here in NC. She sent me the paperwork stating that if it is my first time I could get the warranty for $405.00 for the year. I contacted the renewal department and told them I would like to get the year plan for the $405.00, Daniel told me I could only get that if I was new to the company. So a new customer gets the same warranty for $75.00 less then I do. If I have had my home past 60 days and first time getting the warranty it is $492.00, my renewal is $480.00 and I pay up front the full amount. What is wrong with... Read More

My HVAC was not cooling on one floor. The contractor took 3 days to respond. When he did, he missed his appointment and did not call. My boyfriend waited all day at my house for them to show. Then he missed a second appointment on the 5th day without a call. I called FAHW and they said it was probably a damper, which they did not cover, so I cancelled the appointment. Later that day the contractor showed up even though I had cancelled. He looked at the unit and hit it and said "I think that fixed it". His assistant said he knew nothing about HVAC and had been hired on Craiglist the day before. They had no diagnostic tools and worked out of the trunk of a car. I called FAHW and... Read More

If I could give this company no stars I would. I have been dealing with this company for 7 years and the service they provide has continued to diminish. Most recently I have placed a claim about my heat pump not cooling and it has been over a month and the issue has still not been resolved. No one calls back when they say they will, they hang up the phone on you and/or keep you waiting on hold so you hang up to avoid answering questions, and if you need to replace an expensive system, they will give you the run around until you get tired and fix the problem yourself. I have read all the low score reviews on this site and the comments are true. Please by any means do not use this company... Read More

This company does zero follow up on any claims that are made. I was left without A/C for 12 days because the contractor they assigned to the claim did not complete the job and had to be called back before they would return. Despite terrible reviews First American continues to use the contractor that fell through for my claim. This company uses the bottom of the barrel for any services needed. Good luck

We have this "coverage"! Our central air system failed. First American sent a contractor to fix our system but failed to do so on three repeated attempts. They eventually proposed to replace the unit but wanted us to pay an outrageous fee for parts that they had already used in the previous repair attempts. They then proposed that we take a buy out that was substantially less than that of a reasonable replacement cost. We have contacted two with local providers who report that parts associated with unit replacement should be provided as a function of covered costs. Something stinks here!

We had two out of four service calls denied because they were rxcluded from our "premium" coverage. On another service call the plumber was not able to clear the clog, scratched my toilet significantly and we were still billed s 65.00 service fee. Customer service reps are unable or unwilling to help and English capabilities of customer services reps is often poor. Makes previous home warranty providers that we had compare favorably vs First American. Very poor impression of the company and reflects very poorly on the parent company.

I have used several home warranty companies. As a Real Estate Professional, I am familiar with most. I recently switched to FAHW and I would not advocate for their services in any facet. They have declined 70% of my claims and it takes a long time for a service provider to get back to do the work. Sadly disappointed. Cancelling as soon as my agreement which I paid the year in advance expires, maybe even sooner.
