Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

This company sucks. They do not hire enough contractors to cover large metro areas. The response time to get someone out to your home is ridiculous. Further, when their contractors don't show up at their scheduled time some how it becomes your problem. They do not work with you to get a contractor back out there in a timely fashion while the appliance still doesn't work. Highly not recommended.

We have not had to use our home warranty often, but when we have the past year, they have sent the least desireable contractor for the least amount of money. Long waits, HVAC contractor covered 3 states and tried to sell us items we did not need. Did not even look at the unit in the attic. Electrical contractor is a one man show and only works 4 1/2 days a week. We are very, very unhappy with the choices we have been given. I have written several times to complain, but get nothing but form letters back from them. We are very, very disapppointed with this company.

Garbage! Must use Warranty contractor they choose, even if it takes them four days to come out to service the problem. Service charge is marginal, $65. Customer service is poor, needing to talk to a supervisor to make any progress with making an appointment with their contractor. Very Disappointed with this company, Switching to America's 1st Choice Home Club, Locking in a rate of $1195 for their three year Gold Plan, $60 Service charge.

HORRIBLE COMPANY - HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE- RIPOFF I was a customer of this company for over 10 years. I am canceling my service today after over a month of trying to get my dishwasher repaired. After my paying for 10 years for warrantees on premium appliances (at a higher than regular premium) First American has refused to provide service to my dishwasher. Recently they sent some one from "Major Home Appliance Service" who was completely unprofessional and belligerent. The "technician" advised that we needed to install an air gap in our sink, when the dishwasher already has an inline air gap. Instead of fixing our appliance, the technician took the entire assembly apart, stating that... Read More

I would not purchase from First American again/ever! There is a clause to a clause on what they will or shall I say will NOT cover on a claim. The consumer's portion in the end is going to be at least 2/3 of the bill if not more. Absolutely so frustrating and ridiculous. You will deal with people overseas so huge communication gap. If it wasn't for me having my rep's direct number I would literally have gotten ZERO out of them. I have the top of the line coverage also. I am researching other companies as I definately will not be renewing with these guys again. Beware!

This warranty service has no providers in the Central Oregon area. However, they don't bother to mention that until you have an emergency. I had to wait 5 days in the winter to get heater fixed. My pipes could have frozen if it weren't for exceptional insulation. Nice way to handle an emergency. Then I recently had a plumbing issue that was an emergency, and it took them all day to call to say they were looking for someone and would call back in an hour. They never called back. I had to call them and was told they had no one under contract in the area. It's now after hours, which would mean a very large after hour charge for me. They approved $125.00 for me to find someone on my own to... Read More

Run away. I tried FAHW on friend's referral. First time I needed them, they referred me to a contractor that couldn't fix my unit and scheduled an appointment without confirming with me. I could not reach the contractor to reschedule. The second contractor scheduled an appointment with me, listed the time of the appointment on the contractor website with my claim, then failed to show. When I called, the calls went to a full voicemail box. I called FAHW, they were able to contact the contractor and kept telling me that there was a miscommunication, he appointment was for the next day, and there was nothing they could do. I referred them several times to the note in the file with the... Read More

Do yourself a favor and do not select this warranty co. Some of the vendors that they use are unprofessional, don't show and take your service fee and NEVER get it to FA. Then, they turn you into collections because they say it wasn't paid. When you try to resolve the matter, the vendor nor FA will return your calls. Appeals don't work. No one answers your pleas for help. Then, cancel your policy when you sell your home, follow their step by step instructions on cancelling the policy, then find out FA feels its okay to continue to draft your account for a month of premium AFTER you have sold your home. Their response, "well, you have had some claims...." I have been trying for... Read More

Save your money, they have a million excuses to not cover & uphold their warranty. When I complained I was told to hire a licensed person myself (out of my pocket) & submit their report and they would review it to determine if the would change their decision. They I pay monthly without fail I need to use my warranty & they decide NOPE. And want me to hire my own person. What is the purpose of having their warranty. Then I ask if I could cancel our contract, I was told to submit it in writing, it would be reviewed but I may have a cancellation fee. Well, I am very aware of how they make money now.I even spoke with a supervisor for almost a hour, who again stated they would NOT send anyone... Read More

I entered into a contract with FIRST AMERICAN HOME WARRANTY in December 2016, paid premiums through March and filed my first claim on March 25th, 2017 which involved a clogged kitchen sink was still waiting and negotiating with FAHW April 05, 2017 and they responded by sending out a plumber who was paid a $65.00 up front service fee to repair the sink but instead merely did a walk through my home while taking notes on his laptop that stated that the problem was NOT the clogged kitchen sink but had to do with an issue in the bathroom sink. Nothing was done and the plumber left after about 20 minutes of taking notes and said that I would have to call FAHW to confirm IF the job could be done.... Read More
